Journal Entry : August 21, 2013 • Yesterday, Australian Christopher Lane, a baseball player at East Central University (Ada, OK), was shot and killed by three teenage boys in Duncan, Ok. • Two of the boys have been charged as adults with first degree murder. The third boy has been charged as an accessory to murder. • The former Prime Minister of Australia stated; "People thinking of going to the USA for business or tourists trips should think carefully about it given the statistical fact you are 15 times more likely to be shot dead in the USA than in Australia per capita per million people." • 1- Should the teenagers be charged as adults? Why or why not? • 2- Does the former Prime Minister pose a valid argument? Why or why not? • 3- What impact, if any, will this make on future college athletes studying in America?

Journal Entry: August 22, 2013 • Seeing that this is Oklahoma, many of you (us) have Native American heritage. • (If this does not apply to you, simply write in your journal that it doesn’t apply.) • For those of you who are of Native American descent, tell me what you know about your heritage. • Do you know the tribal language? • Do you know the history of the tribe? • Who from your family is the descendant? • Answer the questions and keep your journal.

  6. Creation Myths • Almost every culture has a creation myth. On Biblical creation presuppositions, they are all basically variations of the core theme of the God-given creation account found in Genesis. • A number of researchers have concluded that the source of all creation myths stems back to a common point, probably actual historical events in history (Van Over 1980; Roth, 1981). They all come from one early source and are different only because time and local cultural circumstances have embellished or altered them. This is the reason why the details in the creation myths vary, but either the basic outline is similar, or at least they share common elements. • Van Over, one of the leading "creation myth" researchers concluded (1980: 10), "The surprising and perplexing fact is that the basic themes for (creation) myths in widely different geographical areas are strikingly similar."

Journal Entry: August 26, 2013 • A recent proposal has passed in Columbia, South Carolina that will “evict” some 1,500 homeless people from it’s growing downtown area. • Officials from the city believe that the homeless people are taking away from the progress that the city is making to “reinvent” itself. • In saying this, think about downtown Oklahoma City. Those of you who visit downtown know that there is a large shelter for homeless people that is unable to fully house the homeless population. • Oklahoma City has also been reinventing itself. • Do you think that Oklahoma City should do the same? • If so, what would the homeless population do? • Is it morally acceptable to ask the homeless population to leave?

Journal Entry: August 27, 2013 • Last year, officials in New York passed a law to the amount of soft drinks people can purchase at a time. • The same officials have recently adopted a legislation that will restrict people from purchasing cigarettes until they are 21 years old. Based on a recent study, “Approximately 90% of smokers have already started smoking by age 18.” • In a brief statement, Mayor Michael Bloomburg says, “"I think a 21-year-old is much more likely, based on their maturity and life experiences, to be able to make an informed rational decision about a behavior that might affect the rest of their life than, say, an 18-year-old.“ • 1- Do you agree with Bloomburg’s statement? Why or why not? • 2- Will this law be effective in limiting smoking among young people? Why or why not? • 3- Should cigarettes even be legal? Why or why not?

Journal Entry: August 28, 2013 • Copy the Academic Vocabulary terms and definitions. • Analysis – the study of a literary work, separating it into parts in order to determine its nature. • Argument – a statement or the main point of a piece. • Author’s purpose – the reason (s) an author has for writing a piece; to inform, persuade, or entertain. • Citation – the acknowledgement of ideas found in outside sources • Claim – a statement or assertion presented as fact.

Journal Entry: September 4, 2013 • Copy the Academic Vocabulary terms and definitions. • Complex character – a character with multiple or conflicting motivations • Concluding statement/section – the final sentence or section in a written selection • Connotative meaning – an association for a word that is implied by the word’s ideas or qualities • Counterclaim – a statement or assertion opposing the originally presented claim • Credibility – the condition, quality, or power of being worthy of confidence or belief

Journal Entry: September 5, 2013 • Term Review: (Trust me, you will need these soon…) • Imagery - visually descriptive or figurative language • Repetition - The return of a word, phrase, stanza form, or effect in any form of literature • Allusion - A figure of speech making casual reference to a famous historical or literary figure or event. • Author’s Purpose - In literature, authorial intent refers to an author's purpose as it is encoded in his or her work. The authors purpose it typically to inform (teach), entertain, or to persuade (convince).

Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God • What is the purpose of the sermon? • According to Edwards, how can mankind save itself? • Identify some messages, images, or phrases that Edwards repeats frequently. What is the purpose of this repetition? What is the effect? • Give 5 examples of imagery from the sermon. • What biblical allusion is made in the sermon? • Edwards puts emphasis on the “pleasure of God.” How would you define the ‘pleasure of God’? What kind of picture of God does Edwards paint for his listeners when he discusses the ‘pleasure of God’? • What does Edwards assume his audience is afraid of? How does he utilize these fears to his advantage? What new fears does he cultivate?
