Objectivity • Should clearly define what things an official does which makes him or her a better partner. • Designed to improve performance • Should be explained to the membership – (procedures, objectives etc..) • My be fair and impartial • Application of the rating process should be consistent • Rating forms should be custom-designed for the needs of the officials • Officials who rate should be trained • Criteria for success or failure must be clearly defined for rated and raters

  4. Factors in Evaluating Performance • Years and level of experience • Number of clinics and camps attended • Unsolicited communication from athletic administrators or coaches (could be in the form of positive praise or negative reactions)

  5. Peer Evaluation • The best peer raters are those individuals who can teach and motivate • Rater can not be vindictive • Must have the ability to be open and honest • Best if coming from someone not working directly with each other

  6. Evaluations by Coaches • Can a coach remain objective since they are so concerned about win-loss • Coaches should be asked to assess officials ability to commincate • Open-Ended Questions

Areas to Evaluate • Make calls which parallel the flow and momentum • Reads the game well and keeps it flowing • Demonstrates willingness to change in skills and approach • Creates and maintains a pleasant atmosphere • Enjoys and wants to be part of the game • Asks for and seeks assistance • Learns and improves from mistakes

  8. Areas to Evaluate • Handles “gray areas” • Uses “no calls” in an effective manner • Is consistent in making calls on both teams • Makes good use of common sense to solve problems • Applies rules quickly after infractions occur

Areas to Evaluate • Effectiveness in human relation skills. • Handles complaints in a diplomatic manner • Maintains composure when dealing with players • Remains unbiased when enforcing rules • Admits making errors • Reacts correctly and confidently • Is courteous to all participants and game personnel

Areas to Evaluate • Overall communication with coaches and players • Is receptive to questions which are reasonable asked • Projects voice at proper volume • Does not embarrass players or coaches • Does not sue profanity or sarcasm • Relates to participants in a clear and concise manner • Has an appropriate sense of humor • Uses preventive techniques where applicable

  11. Areas of Eval • Positioning • Engages in warmup activities before game • Demonstrates fitness by staying with plays • Hustles to get to best position to make each call • Stays alert throughout the contest

  12. Areas of Eval • Teamwork with partner (s) • Helps partner with court coverage • Shares responsibility in calling fouls • Covers own areas of responsibility • Establishes eye contact often with partner • Is open to constructive creitcism

  13. Areas of Eval • Strength of mechanics and whistle • Uses a whistle which is loud enough • Exhibits coverage off-the-ball • Uses hand signals clearly and properly • Demonstrates proper administrative procedures

  14. Areas of Eval • Control of bench personnel • Interacts positively with people on the bench • Selectively ignores negative remarks • Does not act aggressively in response to critical comments

  15. Areas of Eval • Body Language • Demonstrates a look of confidence • Gives appropriate gestures, which are positive • Appears to be alert and interested • Facial expressions exhibit positive attitude

  16. Areas of Eval • Professional Presentation • Arrive on time • Engages in a pregame conference with partner (s) • Attired in the proper uniform • Is neat and clean in appearance • Avoids physical contact with players and coaches
