User Experience at Seneca Libraries Tech & Ref Staff Day January , 2011
A Brief History of User Experience User Experience (also known as “UX”) is a term originally coined by Donald Norman “User Experience Design” in the 1990s. Donald Norman wrote one of the classic usability design books: “The Design of Everyday Things” back in 1990. As such, the origin of UX lies within Usability Engineering / Usability Design.
The Original Definition "User experience" encompasses all aspects of the end-user's interaction with the company, its services, and its products. The first requirement for an exemplary user experience is to meet the exact needs of the customer, without fuss or bother. Next comes simplicity and elegance that produce products that are a joy to own, a joy to use. True user experience goes far beyond giving customers what they say they want, or providing checklist features. In order to achieve high-quality user experience in a company's offerings there must be a seamless merging of the services of multiple disciplines, including engineering, marketing, graphical and industrial design, and interface design. Seriously, what does this mean to me? Rather than doing things “as it has always been done” we need to occasionally question the service or product that we provide based on these seven qualities of user experience. (from http://semanticstudios.com/publications/semantics/images/honeycombbig.jpg)

UX and Seneca Libraries • UX exercise: • Harley-Davidson isn’t in the business of selling motorcycles…they sell the concept of freedom to middle-aged men. • What about us?
UX and Seneca Libraries Seneca Libraries isn’t in the business of simply connecting people with information, the library…
