Hydrology SAF • SAF on Support to Operational Hydrology and Water Management • Host institute: Italian Meteorological Service (USAM), involving Member States and Cooperating States • SAF products focuses on • precipitation • soil moisture • snow parameters • utilisation of these parameters in hydrological models and NWP • The H-SAF started Development Phase in September 2005
Eight SAFs • Satellite Application Facility • providing products and services to users on an operational basis with a long-term perspective • specialised on topics and themes • located at Weather Services in EUMETSAT Member and Co-operating States • developed and operated by consortium of partners • part of the EUMETSAT application ground segment • complement production of standard meteorological products at EUMETSAT central facility

CDOP-2 • SAF Network after 2012: • 5 years of CDOP-2 foreseen within the MTG budget • strategy under definition • SAFs started planning for 2012-2017 • to include MTG products • Integration with other initiatives: Eumetcal, GMES, WMO SCOPE-CM, GHRSST, GODAE
MTG Phase A • 3-axis platforms Imaging Satellites (MTG-I) • The Flexible Combined Imager (FCI) • The Lightning Imager (LI) • The Data Collection System (DCS) and Search and Rescue (GEOSAR) • Sounding Satellites (MTG-S) • The Infrared Sounder (IRS) • The Ultra-violet, Visible and Near Infrared Sounder (UVN). UVN is provided as GMES Sentinel 4 Instruments

Training on societal benefit areas of applications • EXAMPLE: LAND • Brasilia, Course on Land applications of Satellites. Dec 2008 • Sofia, Drought and fires. Sep 2009 • Maputto, Use of satellite products to monitor the soil. Nov 2009 • Yearly course in English or French on land use, starting 2010 • Biennial workshop on Drought and Fire applications, 2011, Turkey
Training topic: Precipitation • Proposed training event • 11-15 October 2010 • Audience: Eastern Europe and African hydrologists from NMHS • Embedded in the IPWG workshop • Afternoon modular training sessions • Moodle infrastructure available for communication and repository • Saba-Centra on-line lectures invited • H-SAF implication as lecturers, planners, training module providers
Training topic: Precipitation (EC) • Marie Curie Initial Training Network programme • On satellite precipitation estimation and water resources. • Twice: 2011-2012 • Keynote speakers required • Workshops for academic/industry/users • H-SAF implication as lecturers ?
Blended courses • Mixture of distance and classroom phases • Covering a period of two to three months • Based on communication tools • Centra Saba: on-line presentations • Moodle: tidy repository of materials and training activities and discussions (forum, chat, quiz, glossary, exercise, documents)
andEUMeTrain • EUMETCAL is the EUMETNET training project • EUMETCAL is the European Virtual Organisation for Meteorological Training with focus on courses • http://www.eumetcal.org/ • EUMeTrain is a EUMETSAT project, similar to a SAF for training • EUMeTrain produces training material and delivers training on satellite meteorology (outsourcing) • http://www.zamg.ac.at/eumetrain/ • Topical weeks: Convection, Mediterranean, Fog, Dust (March 2010), Precipitation ??
