DRAPSO : 3rd party activity The Data Routing and Alternative Processing System for Oceansat (DRAPSO) represents the EUMETSAT contribution to the Oceansat-2 NRT system. More recent information on this 3rd party activity, see the following 29th OPS WG contribution by Thomas Heinemann EUM/STG-OPSWG/29/11/VWG/09 – Item 9.2 Furthermore: A concerted EU response to Oceansat-2 CalVal Research Announcement of Opportunity is place: Led by Ad Stoffelen. This is supported by the EUMETSAT OSI SAF .

-OWDP: Oceansat2 Wind Data Processor • We compute Wind Vector Cell s 0 for each view as • Except in case of (L2A sigma0 flags): • Sigma0 is poor • Kp is poor • Invalid footprint • Footprint contains saturated slice • SeaWinds data processor clone S: summation over slices
OSCAT workshop, 4-8 Oct 2010 speed direction • QuikScat vs ECMWF • As with NWP SAF • SeaWinds Data Processor (SDP) • Standard deviations • Values are given • Oct, 2010 1.29 m/s 11.30 deg east component north component 1.28 m/s 1.40 m/s
OSCAT workshop, 4-8 Oct 2010 • Oceansat2 • L2B vs ECMWF • Outliers reason for degradation w.r.t. QDP ? • Bias at low speeds • Oct,2010 1.56 m/s 14.29 deg 1.87 m/s 1.76 m/s
OSCAT workshop, 4-8 Oct 2010 • OWDP vs ECMWF • OWDP improves quality w.r.t. L2B • Now 5% QC as for QuikScat; similar to L2B • No speed bias (but cut-off due to s 0 PDF) • No outer swath processed yet in OWDP • Oct,2010 1.33 m/s 13.85 deg 1.62 m/s 1.55 m/s
Further progress agreed Oct ‘10 • ISRO to correct and verify with NASA/NOAA/KNMI low backscatter values; provide updated L1B and L2A/B data • Documentation and data formats from sensor team • Retrieval procedures will be verified by all the agencies and retrieval results will be exchanged (ongoing) • KNMI will provide feedback on ambiguity removal as well as Rain flagging • KNMI feedback on Ice flag Data; ISRO will compare OSCAT Ice flags with NSIDC, ECMWF and BYU Icemask • Requirement of 3-hour timeliness • Setup of Svalbard-ISRO link and “back-up” link Svalbard-EUMETSAT
OSCAT workshop, 4-8 Oct 2010 First Assessment • OSCAT provides useful measurements from space: • s0 PDF biased and show cut off for lower winds; • Reasonable verification against buoys > 6 m/s; • Ambiguity removal in L2B probably too smooth • More detailed analysis ongoing: Radiometric resolution (Kp), rain flagging and QC, sea ice algorithm • Under the Announcement of Opportunity (AO) Projects for the international scientific community, the First Oceansat-2 International AO Science Meeting is scheduled during March 23-25, 2011 at Space Applications Centre, Ahmedabad, India. • Parallel OSCAT L2A data streams are requested to prepare adjustments related to L0/1 processing updates.
