The Endocrine System • The Endocrine System is made up of glands that are located throughout the body. • A hormone is a specific messenger molecule synthesized and secreted by a group of specialized cells called an endocrine gland. • Pheromones are communication chemicals, but are used to send signals to other members of the same species.
Different Glands • The pituitary gland is called the “master gland” but it is under the control of the hypothalamus. • The adrenal glands sit on top of the kidneys and consists of two parts, the outer cortex and the inner medulla. • The thyroid gland releases the thyroid hormone, which regulates homeostasis.
Different Hormones • Steroid Hormones including prostaglandins which function especially in a variety of female functions and the sex hormones all of which are lipids made from cholesterol. • Antidiuretic Hormone or ADH hormone helps prevent excess water excretion by the kidneys.
Different Organs • The pancreas has two functions. It serves as a ducted gland, secreting digestive enzymes into the small intestine. The pancreas also serves as a gland to regulate blood sugar levels. • The gonads are sex organs that release estrogen and testosterone.
Summary • The endocrine system is a system of glands throughout the body that send and receive chemical signals called hormones to various receptors in the body. When the signals are received the gland will act in a specific way based on what the hormone tells it to do whether it be sexually, bodily, or physically.
