Discussion The heart of mops
Conversation-the talk before the talk • MOPS is all about relationships • Aim to build bridges of friendship • Be real • Be vulnerable • Be intentional
Be a good listener… • Practise the language of Lurve! • LOOK at the person you are talking to • Give VISUAL approval • Give VERBAL approval
Ask the right kind of questions… • Ask questions that go beyond the surface. • Don’t be afraid to talk about deeper things such as her: • concerns, frustrations and challenges • goals and dreams • Achievements • Respond in love and with encouragement. Affirm and Encourage!!
The Talk… Make sure it is: • True- based in God’s truth • Relevant- to the needs of the mums in your group- • Practical- give them some concrete tips they can take home and use • Encouraging- always encourage them to see the bigger picture of the mum they can become without condemning them and making them feel like failures • Covers a balance of topics- balance your term with fun, relationship, parenting and God topics
Talk after The Talk Discussion Groups are a super powerful and vitally important element of a MOPS morning. They are the difference between a MOPS group that is a nice coffee morning and one that offers a life-changing experience.
The purpose of discussion groups • Build community • Caring and sharing units, where the women develop a sense of belonging. • To reinforce that day’s teaching. • Provide a safe place where a woman can be guided and encouraged into a relationship with Jesus.
How a MOPS team works… • The Discussion Group leader is on the team and responsible for the Discussion segment of the morning. • Discussion Table Leaders are responsible for a table each. • Together they make up the Discussion sub-team.
Size • Around 6 per group • 8 or more and you will get two groups forming and having separate discussions • Less than this and it is too small • This is enough for one table leader to be responsible for
How do you group your mums? • Randomly • According to age and stage of children • Selection • Make sure you have a good mix of Christian and community mums • Consider mum’s personalities • Allow mum’s to move if they are not comfortable • Keep groupings constant for a year
Don’t worry if you only have 2 mums in a group one week, it may be the week that mum needs to talk.
Program and Questions Make sure that the Table leaders have the program for the morning and the discussion questions emailed to them before the Meeting. Prepare and Pray!
During discussion group time… • You are a facilitator • Be an active listener • Make sure everyone participates • Respect everyone • Don’t make assumptions • Offer positive solutions • Be real- don’t use Christianese • Fear God not man
After the meeting… • Reflect • Follow up • Meet with your DG team- via email • Plan to meet outside of MOPS
Designing questions… • Icebreaker • Content • God-question • Application
Discussion group health assessment How does your team rate?
Like apples of gold in settings of silver is a ruling rightly given.Like an earring of gold or an ornament of fine gold is the rebuke of a wise judge to a listening ear.
Watch the way you talk. Let nothing foul or dirty come out of your mouth. Say only what helps, each word a gift. Ephesians 4.29
May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight,Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer. Ps 19
