Troop 5 Parent Leader Training Troop 5 – Parental Involvement • Active scout participation + Parent guidance/support = Successful Scout • Doesn’t mean you have to camp(although you are more then welcome)      • NO Dump and run – BSA does not mean Babysitters of America • Communicate with your scout

  3. Troop 5 Parent Leader Training Boy Run Troop • Boys plan the theme of meetings/ outings • Parents/adults/committee members take a background role • SPL or ASPL gives directions/ makes decisions with scoutmaster

  4. Troop 5 Parent Leader Training Troop 5 is based on the Patrol Method • A Patrol is a group of about 8 boys that plan, carry out projects and hike and camp together. • Patrols also help boys learn leadership skills in a smaller group format. • Patrols should meet on a regular basis to plan activities, menus and advancement activities.

Troop 5 Parent Leader Training Elections – new youth leaders at all levels • Troop holds Leadership elections every six months • Leadership positions are required for advancement • Elections are for SPL (Senior Patrol Leader) and Patrol leaders • Other positions are appointed by SPL with assistance from the Scoutmaster

  7. Troop 5 Parent Leader Training Troop Meetings (6:30-8:15) • Troop meetings are the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Tuesdays of each month. • Committee meeting 4th Tuesday of month (ALL adults welcome to come) • Patrol Leaders Council (PLC)- youth leadership meets to plan events and discuss troop items

Troop 5 Parent Leader Training Camping/Outings • Parents Role- Boy Run, so the boys make the decisions and work in a patrol method • Once they arrive at the event, you take a background role • Basic gear is provided for camping • Scout is responsible for their uniform, Scout Handbook, Personal Gear, Mess kit

Troop 5 Parent Leader Training Outing Permission Slips • Permission slip MUST be filled out prior to event/outing • The payment for the event is turned in at same time as permission slip • You can either write a check or mark scout account for payment • Refunds are not provided- if you suddenly can’t make an event, you need to find someone to fill your spot (some exceptions apply) • It is parent’s responsibility to be communicate with their scout on events they sign up for

  11. Troop 5 Parent Leader Training Health Forms • All scouts and participating adults must health form on file • 3 Parts and insurance card copy • A/B needed for 72 hours or less • A/B/C needed for anything over 72 hours • Updating information continuously to all scoutmaster/secretary

Troop 5 Parent Leader Training Troop expectations from parents: • Provide up to date information about your son (health concerns, etc.) • Fill out permission slips completely with payment • Bylaws • Code of conduct – Signed by Scout & parent • Discipline - Refer to Code of Conduct for disciplinary issues. • Communicate with your scout on upcoming events • If there is ever an issue please speak to the scoutmaster or have your scout speak to the SPL immediately.
