Thank You! A huge thank you to Julie Anne Kempf, Ben Anderstone, and Betty Means for helping create this presentation. Thank you to Julie Anne & Ben for presenting it. And especially a big thank you to all of you, our members and PCOs and supporters, who are the reasons for our success at every level. Sorry I had to be out of town tonight, David Miller First Vice Chair Elections Committee Chair
Tonight’s Topics • What’s up? • Races & Measures 2014 to 2016 • What can we change for the better? • Opportunities & Challenges • What can we improve? • Applying your feedback from the 2013 effort

Races & Measures 2014 Including PCO Contests • PCOs are elected to two year terms – November 2014 to November 2016. Term begins upon certification of the General Election. • Filing Week is May 12 – 16, 2014 for all 2014 offices • PCO contests appear on the Primary Ballots • Primary Ballots start to arrive on July 18th • The Primary is Tuesday, August 5th • General Election Ballots start to arrive on October 17th • The General Election is Tuesday, November 4th • The General Election is certified on November 25th
Opportunities in 2014 • Organize/run District caucus • The best dry run we’ll have before the 2016 presidential caucus/convention cycle. • Refocus on our platform/values – why we’re Democrats • Train PCOs & activists early in the year for precinct organizing & GOTV • Recruit PCOs throughout the spring • PCOs file May 12 – 16, 2014
Challenges in 2014 • 2014 is a historic year on the election calendar in that there is not a traditional “marquee” race to rally around and build our effort out from as a centerpiece. • We will need to create our own excitement and rallying points. Helping the 48th defeat Rodney Tom is one exciting prospective action. • PCO Recruitment • Recruit PCOs throughout the winter and spring for all of the 46th LD precincts • Resolve vacancies and multiple filings as much as possible before filing week • File PCOs in an organized fashion in May • Welcome back to PCO Coordinator Michael Lorden
Races & Measures 2015 State/County Level * Any of these jurisdictions can place a measure on the ballot.
Races & Measures 2015 Kenmore & Lake Forest Park Caucus #1
Races & Measures 2015 Kenmore & Lake Forest Park Caucus #2
Races & Measures 2015 Kenmore & Lake Forest Park Caucus #3 * Any of these jurisdictions can place a measure on the ballot.
Races & Measures 2015 City of Seattle, Seattle School Dist. * Any of these jurisdictions can place a measure on the ballot.
Opportunities in 2015 • Get 46th LD “home-grown”/ “farm team” Democratic activists inKenmore, LFP, & (new for 2015) Seattle! • Entire Seattle City Council elected • 46th LD covers parts of Districts 4, 5, & 6 • Enthusiasm for 2016 Presidential race • The more viable Presidential candidates, the better the opportunity to grow the party • Huge opportunity to gather grassroots Democrats – many, many races to work on
Challenges in 2015 • Local races – We know and are friends with many of these candidates who may be running against each other. • Critical to manage process so we can all work together • Gearing up early for 2016 Presidential Caucuses • Getting everyone trained & informed for these issues • Endorsement process that’s fair, consistent, and able to handle large numbers of candidates (8-10 per seat) • Staying friends no matter who wins our endorsements
Races & Measures 2016 Federal
Races & Measures 2016 State
Races & Measures 2016 County * Any of these jurisdictions can place a measure on the ballot.
Races & Measures 2016 • Presidential Year • PCOs elected to two year terms – November 2016 to November 2018* • Filing Week is (probably*) May 16 – 20, 2016 • PCO contests appear on the Primary Ballots* • Primary Ballots start to arrive on July 15th* • The Primary is Tuesday, August 2nd* • General Election Ballots start to arrive on October 21st* • The General Election is Tuesday, November 8th* • * This is only the case if the applicable law does not change again in the interim.
Races & Measures 2016 Kenmore - LFP - Seattle * Any of these jurisdictions can place a measure on the ballot.
Opportunities in 2016 Party Building !!!! • Register voters in under-served communities within • the district • Best opportunity to grow the 46th LD membership • Recruit new Democratic grassroots volunteers • Assist less Democrat-rich districts with GOTV • Possible opportunities for the “farm team” to move up
Challenges in 2016 • Broad outreach about the caucus process • – encourage high turn out • Transparent & organized caucus process • – organize for high turn out • Smooth 2016 Presidential Caucuses • – manage high turn out • Convert caucus attendees to regular members • – optimize high turn out • Staying friends and allies no matter who is nominated for President
Your feedback after 2013 • Generally praise, with some expressed concerns, for the new 46th “Local Caucus” process • Endorsement meeting before filing deadline was a • very bad idea • Too few opportunities to interact with & question candidates • Dissatisfaction with dual endorsement process • Too many endorsement meetings • Anything else?
New for 2014 & beyond • Retain the “Local Caucus” process with possible adjustments • Brand New Candidate Breakfast & Forum- Weekend after filing deadline- Meet & Greet candidates during breakfast- Afternoon forum for all candidates/races • Endorsement meeting the week following the event- Julie Anne & Ben helping David keep track of races • Watch February Demogram for proposals to addressDual Endorsement issue – allowing for adding an endorsement if both dual endorsed candidates do not go through to the General
2014 Planning How YOU can help NOW • We need your help to fill in precincts • People to run for PCO • Need volunteers for 2014 District Caucuses • Need volunteers for Tally Committee • Need volunteers for By-Laws & Rules review • Need volunteers for May candidate meet-n-greet event and May fundraiser with endorsement meeting – set-up, food, event staff, programs & clean-up • Anything we have missed?
