  1. What is Science Chapter 1.1 & 1.2 Scientific Method Notes

  2. Chapter 1 vocabulary • Hypothesis • Data • Control • Experimental • Dependent Variable 6. Independent Variable 7. Qualitative • Quantitative • Predict • Analyze Scientific Method Notes

  3. Term: Hypothesis My understanding: 1 2 3 4 • Describe: _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ • Draw picture, symbol, or graphic, cartoon bubbles, representing the term or phrase Scientific Method Notes

  4. Scientific Method steps

  5. Read & Answer • Mr. Krabbs wants to make Bikini Bottoms a nicer place to live. He has created a new sauce that he thinks will reduce the production of body gas associated with eating crabby patties from the Krusty Krab. He recruits 100 customers with a history of gas problems. He has 50 of them (Group A) eat crabby patties with the new sauce. The other 50 (Group B) eat crabby patties with sauce that looks just like new sauce but is really just mixture of mayonnaise and food coloring. Both groups were told that they were getting the sauce that would reduce gas production. Two hours after eating the crabby patties, 30 customers in group A reported having fewer gas problems and 8 customers in group B reported having fewer gas problems. Scientific Method Notes

  6. Q&A MrKrabb’s Sauce • 1. What is the observation Mr. Krabbs made? • 2. Write a summary of the experiment. (3 sentences or less). • 3. What did Mr. Krabbs have control over? • 4. What did Mr. Krabbs measure during the experiment? • 5. What should his conclusion be? Scientific Method Notes

  7. Science Process Skills/Scientific Method • How do scientists investigate the world? 1. Observation poses a question 2. Hypothesis – suggested explanation for the way something functions 3. Prediction-what will happen in an experiment if the hypothesis is true 4. Test (experiment) 5. AnalyzeData- Graphs, tables, figures 6. Conclusion – re-evaluate the hypothesis, form new questions. Scientific Method Notes

  8. Observation vs. Inference Write 4 inferences about the picture Write 4 facts about the picture Scientific Method Notes

  9. The Experiment 1. Control Group • Receive NO treatments • What was the control group in Mr. Krabb’s experiment? 2. Experimental group • Identical to control group except for one factor • that it receives some kind of treatment (independent variable) • What was the experimental group in Mr. Krabb’s experiment? Scientific Method Notes

  10. 2 types of Variables • Independent variable- • the factor that is CHANGED in the experiment • this is what you have control over • What is the IV in Mr. Krabb’s experiment? • Dependent variable- • because the independent variable is changed, this factor could become changed. • It is what you record • What is the DV in Mr. Krabb’s experiment? Scientific Method Notes

  11. The Experiment • Test one variable at a time • Something that YOU can change/manipulate • ID the Variable: • Keeping the lights on for a different amounts of time each day affect the number of eggs chickens laid. • Studying more for science class to see how you do on your exam. Scientific Method Notes

  12. Mr. Krabb’s Experiment • What can Mr. Krabb’s conclusion be? • What can Mr. Krabb’s Inference be? Scientific Method Notes

  13. Table vs. Figure Tables Table 1. Insert Title • A Table is…well, a table containing the data • Contains both independent & dependent variables Scientific Method Notes

  14. Figure 1. (insert title) Figures are graphs, drawings, maps, etc. Purpose- see a trend in the data; picture form of the data Figures Scientific Method Notes

  15. Tables vs. Figures • In Common: • Include units & measurements • Times (hrs) vs. Time (sec) • Mass (grams) vs. Mass (lbs.) 2. Self explanatory titles-Be able pick out Dependent variable, Independent variable, and Subjects a. Bad: Results of Apple Tree Experiment b. Good: The Effect of Temperature on the Change in Height of Apple Trees Over a Ten Year Period • Differences • 1. Title • Table- title goes on the TOP • Figure- Title goes UNDERNEATH the figure • 2. Location • Tables- lined paper/ computer paper/ graph paper • Figures –only on graph paper • Do not crowd on the paper so that it is hard to read Scientific Method Notes

  16. Making a Graph • Which line is X? Y? • Which line is IV? DV? Y DV X, IV Scientific Method Notes

  17. Wrapping Up.. • Communicating Results • Peer Review- Journals & articles • Conferences- Speaking • Why do scientists need to share what they learned with the world? • Theory vs. Law • Scientific Theory- explanation based on many observations during repeated experiments; well supported explanations • CAN be changed or modified • Scientific Law- Principle that describes the behavior of a natural phenomenon.; well supported descriptions • “Rule of Nature” • Ex: Newton’s Law of motion Scientific Method Notes
