WAIMR HISTORY • WAIMR founded by: - The University of Western Australia - Royal Perth Hospital - Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital • Capital fundraising campaign (1998 – 1999) - Wesfarmers the founding sponsor - Strong support from State Government, donors/sponsors • 2003 - Fremantle Hospital joined WAIMR
STATUS • Independent medical research Institute • Incorporated body under the Associations Incorporation Act of WA • Not-for-profit organisation • Charitable organisation under the Charitable Collections Act of WA • Affiliated with UWA
WAIMR PHILOSOPHY • Enhance medical research in WA • Focus on causes of adult diseases • Translate fundamental discovery research into clinical applications • Promote collaboration • Provide new research facilities • Support State-wide infrastructure (equipment, administration etc) • Recruit excellent researchers
RESEARCH PROGRAMS • Over 200 research staff, students and administration • In the top 10 research Institutes in Australia • Emphasis on genetic-based research into adult diseases: • Cancer • Heart / Lung diseases • Hormonal problems • Nerve / muscle disorders • Translate into clinical outcomes
WAIMR BUILDING AT QEII CAMPUS • Core facilities (genomics, proteomics, imaging, cell sorting, monoclonal antibodies etc) • Clinical research area • Laboratories • Animal research • Analysis areas • Cafeteria • Auditorium / meeting areas • (Biotechnology incubators)

CLINICAL TRIALS • New Phase I / II clinical trials facility • State Government allocated $10m to WAIMR • Located at QEII Campus • Operate as a wholly-owned WAIMR subsidiary
