The main idea was that there was this girl named Emma Edmonds and she wanted to fight in the war in 1861, but only men could fight so she decided to go to the Union army disguised as a man. • In 1861 a civil war started • For better or worse, Miss Edmonds was going to war. • She kept tossing and turning. She kept dreaming about her dead dad. At dawn she woke up with a start. She would try the impossible. MainIdea

  5. The story takes place in 1861, when young Emma Edmonds put her hair back, slipped in men clothes. Then she went to go join the union army. She was in danger: injury and illness. Setting

  6. Beginning: The crowds have gone crazy mad about Lincoln. There was going to be a war. Plot Middle: Emma goes into the army dressed up like a man so that she could fight in the war. Along the way she meets a slave named Cuff. End:Cuff’s story about her journey came out soon after the end of hostilities.

  7. The author wants you to learn what it was like back in the 1860’s. He wanted you to feel like you are a slave and you are running away from your owner. He wanted you know what it was like being a solider or being a nurse in the army. Author’s Purpose
