  4. A model body paragraph • Conrad presents a damning indictment of colonialism in ‘Heart of Darkness’. In the opening pages, Marlow describes Brussels as ‘the whited sepulchre’. This description alludes to Jesus’ characterisation of the Pharisees as ‘whited sepulchres who are full of dead men’s bones’. In this way, Marlow has emphasised the hypocritical nature of Brussels. Like the Pharisees, it is outwardly attractive but devoid of purpose. In this way, he has underlined the moral bankruptcy of Brussels and its colonial mission.
