  1. Chemistry Lab Equipment

  2. Safety Goggles • Protect eyes whenever working with chemicals in the lab

  3. Test Tubes • Store/Mix small amounts of substances • Heat/Boil substances over a burner

  4. Beaker • Store/Mix substances • Heat substances over a burner

  5. Test Tube Clamp • Holds a test tube to a ring stand, usually for purposes of heating

  6. Test Tube Holder • Allows you to hold a test tube over a burner or other heat source without burning your hand

  7. Test Tube Rack • Stores several test tubes

  8. Ring Stand • Clamps of any type are placed on this when setting up an experiment

  9. Plastic Wash Bottles • Add small amounts of water to a container • Rinse out glassware • NOT A SQUIRT BOTTLE!

  10. Ring Clamp • Clamped to a ring stand to support other equipment

  11. Wire Gauze • Usually rests on top of a ring clamp to support a beaker being heated

  12. Clay Triangle • Sits on a ring stand to support a crucible or a funnel

  13. Crucible and Cover • Ceramic equipment used to heat a small amount of solid to very high temperatures

  14. Evaporating Dish • Ceramic equipment used to drive off a small amount of liquid to leave a dry residue

  15. Funnel • Tool to aid pouring • Supports filter paper when performing filtration

  16. Watch Glass • Allows things to be set out to dry • Can be used as a cover for a beaker

  17. Dropper Pipet • NOT AN EYE DROPPER! • Transfers small volumes of liquids

  18. Stirring Rod with Rubber Policeman • Stirring Rod is used to stir mixtures • Rubber Policeman is used like a spatula, to scrape out residue • I have no idea where a rubber policeman gets its name!

  19. Erlenmeyer Flask • All flasks have a wide base and a narrow neck • Erlenmeyer flasks are conical in shape • Used to swirl mixtures easily while avoiding spilling

  20. Florence Flask • Again, wide at the base, narrow at the neck • Florence flasks are spherical in shape

  21. Graduated Cylinder • Tall, narrow tube used to measure volumes of a liquid • NOTE: While beakers and flasks have graduations on them as well, they are NOT AS ACCURATE as graduated cylinders - only use cylinders to measure volume!!!

  22. Beaker Tongs • Can “grab” beakers, especially when hot, easily to move it from one place to another (this is not on your equipment list)

  23. Crucible Tongs • A tool for smaller, finer work, a crucible tongs is used to move hot crucibles (or other objects) • Note - tongs are NOT spelled with an “h”!

  24. Bunsen Burner and Rubber Tubing • Bunsen Burner is a common source of heat (flame) in the lab • Rubber Tubing is a common means of carrying a gas from one place to another (for Bunsen burners, we will carry natural gas or methane)

  25. Mortar and Pestle • Used to crush or grind solids
