  1. Chapter 7EthnicityKey issue 2-Why have Ethnicities been transformed into Nationalities?-Rise of nationalities-Multinational States-Revival of ethnic identity

  2. Nationalism • Nationalism- is loyalty and devotion to a nation • Nationalism usually promotes behavior that makes one nation think its better than the other. • Nationalism is often forced to citizens through the media which the government either or owns or control

  3. Nationalism (cont.) • Countries and states influence nationalism by flags and songs • Can have a negative impact • The sense of unity within a state is through the creating of negative images of other nations • Little jokes like “How many (fill in a nationality) are needed to change a light bulb?” showed dislike for other nationalities.

  4. Nationalism (cont.) • Centripetal Force- an attitude that tends to unify people and enhance support for a state • Most nation states find that the best way to get citizen support to influence shared attitudes that unify people

  5. Nationality • Nationality is an identity with a group of people who share legal attachment and personal allegiance to a particular country. • Nationality and ethnicity are similar concepts in that membership in both is defined through shared cultural values. • The cultural values shared with others of the same ethnicity derive from religion, language, and material culture, where as those shared with others of the same nationality derive from voting, obtaining a passport, and performing civic duties.

  6. Nationality • Nationality identifies citizens of the Unites States of America including those born in the country and those who immigrated and became citizens. • Ethnicity identifies groups with distinct ancestry and cultural traditions, such as African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Chinese Americans, or Polish Americans. • Race distinguishes people by the color of their skin.

  7. Nationality • People from the 19th century identify themselves by their ethnicity rather than their nationality. • U.S. immigration officials record the nationality of immigrants, but the immigrants considered ethnicity more important than nationality. • The United States is a nation of ethnic groups.

  8. Nation- States • A nation-state is a state whose territory corresponds to that occupied by a particular ethnicity that has been transformed into a nationality.

  9. Nation- States (cont.) • Ethnic groups have been transformed into nationalities because desire for self rule is a very important shared attitude for many of them. • The concept that ethnicities have the right to govern themselves is known as self determination. • Many political leaders supported the right of self determination in the 19th- 20th century.

  10. Nation-States (cont.) • The political leaders at this time attempted to organize Earth’s Surface into a collection of nation-states.
