Fluid Pressure • Pressure- the result of a force distributed over an area • The smaller the area the greater the force • Bike seat verse couch seat • Pressure = force /area Units: Pressure is in Pascal (Pa) or kilopascals(kPa) [1kPa = 1000 Pa] Force is in Newtons (N) Area is in m2 • Force = mass x acceleration • Area = length x width
Calculating Pressure A box with a weight of 2700 N is resting on the ground. If the area of the box touching is 1.5 m2, what pressure does the box exert on the ground? Pressure = force / area Pressure = 2700 N / 1.5 m2 Pressure = 1800 Pa how many kPa is this? Pressure = 1.8 kPa
Calculating Pressure A book with a weight of 12 N rests on its back cover. If the back cover measures 21 cm by 28 cm, how much pressure does the book exert? Pressure = Force / Area Pressure = 12 N / (.21 m x .28 m) Pressure = 12 N / .059 m2 Pressure = 203.3 Pa Pressure = .203 kPa
