ACID- BASE REACTIONS Section 10.3
WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEMONS, MAKE LEMONADE!!! DEMO Spot the pink lemon!
NEUTRALIZATION REACTION • Acid + Base Salt + Water • Adding an acid to a base neutralizes the acid’s acidic properties
NEUTRALIZATION REACTION Ex: H NO3(aq) + NaOH (aq) NaNO3(aq)+ H2O(l) • The Salt is an ionic compound that is composed of the anion from an acid and a cation from a base
ACID/ BASE INDICATORS • Used to indicate that a reaction is occurring • Change colour in acidic and basic solutions • Most indicators are weak monoprotic acids • The un-dissociated weak acid is one colour and its conjugate base is another colour
COLOUR 1 COLOUR 2 ACID/ BASE INDICATORS H (indicator)(aq) H+ (aq) + indicator- (aq) Ex: Phenophthalein
CALCULATIONS INVOLVING NEUTRALIZATION REACTIONS Example 1: 13.84 mL of HCl neutralizes 25.00 mL of a 0.100 mol/L solution of NaOH. What is the concentration of hydrochloric acid?
Example 1 continued… HCl (aq) + NaOH(aq) NaCl(aq) + H2O (l) GIVEN: HCl NaOH v = 13.84 mL v = 25.0 mL c = ? c = 0.10mol/L n = ? n = c x v n = (0.10 mol/L ) x (0.025L) n = 0.0025 mol NaOH
Example 1 continued… HCl (aq) + NaOH(aq) NaCl(aq) + H2O (l) - From equation we see that 1 HCl : 1 NaOH • Therefore, for every 0.0025 mol NaOH that reacts, 0.0025 mol HCl also reacts. n HCl = 0.0025 v = 13.84 mL c = n/v = 0.0025 mol/ 0.01384 L = 0.1806 mol/L HCl Therefore, the [HCl] is 0.1806 mol/L
ACID-BASE TITRATION • Process used to help determine the [ ] of an unknown acid or base. • EQUIVALENCE POINT: point in reaction where the [OH-] = [H+] • Or moles of acid = moles of base • Indicated by a colour change (indicator) • Pages 399- 401 about HOW to do a titration. YOU NEED THIS FOR LAB TOM!
HOMEWORK • Page 398 # 10-13 • Read INVESTIGATION 10-B: • The concentration of Acetic acid in vinegar • Write up pre-lab (MSDS, etc)
