  1. Emmett Till • 14 year old boy • Murdered by 2 white men for allegedly flirting with one of their wives • The murderers were found not guilty

Montgomery Bus Boycott • Began with the arrest of Rosa Parks on December 1, 1955 – she was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a white man • Busses were segregated • Lasted until December 20, 1956, when segregated busses were found to be unconstitutional • Led by Martin Luther King, Jr. • Boycott: to choose to not purchase a good or service

  3. Little Rock Nine (1957) • Integration of schools after Brown v. Board • Nine students picked to integrate Little Rock HS • The governor of Arkansas prevented them from entering the building until troops sent by President Eisenhower escorted them into the school

  4. Civil Rights Act of 1964 • Civil rights law that outlaws discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex and/or national origin

  5. 24th Amendment (1964) • Made poll taxes unconstitutional

  6. 26th Amendment (1971) • Gave 18 year olds the right to vote • Lowered the voting age from 21

  7. Affirmative Action Supreme Court Cases

  8. What is It?? • Affirmative actionrefers to policies that take factors including "race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation or national origin" into consideration in order to benefit an underrepresented group.

  9. Term was first introduced by JFK in 1961. • Affirmative Action is justified as countering the effects of a history of discrimination!!
