  2. Who was Emmett Till? • 14 year old African-American boy from Chicago • Liked to tell jokes, very outspoken • His mother Mamie, sent him to Money, MS in 1955 to visit relatives

The Scenario Went to a candy store and while leaving, said “Bye Baby” to a white woman Woman turned out to be the candy store owner’s wife 3 days after the incident, Roy Bryant, the woman’s husband, and his friend J.W. Milam drove to Till’s residence Till was found 4 days later beaten, shot, and stripped at the bottom of the Tallahatchie river with a 75 pound cotton gin around his neck Milam and Bryant were arrested that same day

The Trial • Blacks were intimidated from testifying against the two white men • However, Till’s uncle testified to a harsh white courtroom. • After only 67 min. of deliberation, Bryant and Milam were acquitted of all charges • This led to widespread shock and horror by both African-American’s and many whites.

Historical Significance • Till’s murder sparked the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960’s • Inspired Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks to lead the movenment • Seldomly taught in high school history classes • I feel Emmett Till was the true spark that started the Civil Rights Movement.
