Where did they come from? • The Hebrews originally came from a city-state in Mesopotamia. A man by the name of Abram received word from Yahweh to take his family out of Mesopotamia. Abram took his family to Canaan.
Promise • Yahweh and Abram’s promise: God had promised Abram that as long as Abram obeyed his word, he would provide Abram with the “Promise” land. Abram and Yahweh’s promise is known as the covenant.
Name Change • After Yahweh and Abram made their agreement, Abram changed his name to Abraham. Abraham is known as the ’father of the Hebrews’.
Canaan • Canaan is the land of present day Israel. Canaan is located between the Mesopotamian empire and Egypt. When the Hebrews moved to Israel they were called Israelites.
While in Canaan • The Hebrews lived as shepard in Canaan. The land of Canaan was filled with dates, figs, wheat, barley, and flax. The Hebrews were happy to find a spot where they could finally settle.
More Riches Canaan was more than just an agricultural smorgasbord. It was also a trade lot between Egypt and Mesopotamia.
All is Perfect • All is going well in Canaan until there is a drought. The Hebrews have a difficult time growing any of their crops and have to move to a different land. It is there faith that keeps them hopeful of their future.
On the Road Again • The Hebrews moved to Egypt where they were looking for land to settle on. They settled and started their civilization again in Egypt. The Egyptians feared the power of the Hebrews. The Egyptians took the Hebrews over as their slaves.
Closure Today we learned about the agreement between Yahweh and Abram and how the Hebrews moved from Mesopotamia to the Promise land and then to Egypt and why.
