  4. MUFN Project • Finalist to host 1999 Vice-President Debate • Lost due to “lack of adequate Internet access” • Hosted 2002 National Mayors Conference • Used temporary broadband to meet needs • Developed “interested parties” roundtable to address affordable broadband access issues

MUFN BTOP Proposal • Built public/private partnerships • Partners include: UW Health (UWHC/UWMF/Med); Meriter Hospital; Madison and Middleton cities; Madison, Monona Grove and Middleton Cross Plains school districts, South Central Library System, UW-Madison, Madison College, State Lab of Hygiene, UW-Extension WGNHS, DaneNet (representing ~30 community orgs) • 97 education, research/job, health, government locations • Xiocom d/b/a MadCity Broadband commercial service • MUFN Network • $8.86MM project • $5.1MM BTOP grant (announced nationally 3/2/10) • $530k cash contribution • $3.2MM in-kind contribution (existing conduit/fiber)

MUFN BTOP Proposal • Installation of high-count fiber-optic cables in new or existing street right-of-way • 110 miles of new/existing fiber • 87 miles (backbone) • 23 miles (laterals) • 2 year major conduit/fiber construction project • 35.25 miles of conduit • 57.05 miles of fiber • Long-term operations • UW/City of Madison/Xiocom operate fiber • UW performs MUFN business services • Billing (annual basis) • Contract management • Governance – 66.03 intergovernmental agreement • Executive Board

MUFN BTOP Proposal • 1Gb or 10Gbps broadband connections • Residential/Commercial/Anchor Institutions • ~48k households • ~5k businesses • 220 anchor institutions • Saved/created 72 jobs • Buying U.S. materials / services from local groups • Worked with UW Research & Sponsored Programs on submission and ongoing reporting
