The What? • Our current working definition – subject to modification . • Dual Optical Metropolitan Network Rings utilizing 63 miles of IRU/lease/University fiber. • 10 Cisco 15454 Dense Wave Division Multiplexing nodes. • Co-location in the Rochester downtown GigaPOP. • Connects University Resources to Campus and the Internet in collaboration with Rochester Institute of Technology.
The Why? • Enhance research network capabilities. • Eliminate costly Telco local loop. • Eliminate increasing Telco costs to enhance off-site connectivity. • Provision bandwidth without vendor interaction, expense and time -- flexibility. • Significant bandwidth potential -- you can do a lot with two fibers and we have a spare pair as well.
The Key Success Factors • Strong advocates across campus. • Joint collaboration locally with RIT. • Aligned with NYSERNet statewide. • Positioned for future large bandwidth collaborations. • Makes sense from a business perspective and ROI (cost avoidance and efficiencies). • Strong technical staff -- not plug and play.
