O INGLÊS NA ESCÓCIA • Inglês utilizado amplamente no país; • Pronúncia muito diferente do Standard BritishEnglish, marcada pela roticidade (variação rótica); • Forte influência de variações arcaicas do inglês (OldEnglish), que por sua vez sofreu influência de línguas nórdicas; • Os “sotaques” se tornam mais acentuados nas regiões rurais, conhecidas como Highlands; • Palavras de origem gaélica são utilizadas com muita frequência, tornando as variações faladas na Escócia ainda mais singulares.

  3. PECULIARIDADES FONÉTICAS • Intensa Roticidade (o som da letra “r” é mais enfático do que em outras variações róticas). Exemplo: Jim Kerr, from ‘Simple Minds’ ‘I’d like to think, without sounding arrogant, that, before Simple Minds in Glasgow, there certainly wasn’t music scene. Therewas a (sic) coupleofartistsof note, and…greatartists – Alex Harvey, Frankie Miller, AverageWhiteBand – I’mtalkingabout late ‘60s, early ‘70s – kindofhard-drinking, bluesy, whisky, workingmen’s industrial music.   4. Peculiaridades Lexicais • Uso de vocabulário incomum em outras variações da língua inglesa.   5. Peculiaridades gramaticais • Uso de construções gramaticais diferentes quando comparada com outras variações. Exemplo: ScotishEnglishGeneralEnglish 'Are younotgoing?' or 'Areyou no going?' 'Aren'tyougoing?' 'I'maway to mybed' 'I'mgoingtobed.'
