Morrill Act of 1862 “…the leading object shall be, without excluding other scientific and classical studies, and including military tactics, to teach such branches of learning as are related to agriculture and the mechanic arts, in such manner as the legislatures of the states may respectively prescribe, in order to promote the liberal and practical education of the industrial classes in the several pursuits and professions in life.” Morrill Act of 1862
What does “Land Grant” mean? • Each State received 30,000 acres of Federal land for each member of congress – to be sold to form endowment for the A&M College. • If land not available, then scrip was issued entitling the state to sell federal land in other states (e.g., NY sold land in WI) • http://www.iastate.edu/about/cartoon/landgrant.php
The early ones… • Kansas State Univ. - February 16, 1863 • Iowa State Univ. – June 21, 1858 – 1863 • Michigan State Univ. – Feb 12, 1855 (state “land grant”) • Rutgers – the “oldest” – 1766 • Univ. of Vermont – 1864 (Morrill’s home state) • University of Kentucky – 1865 – Agricultural and Mechanical College of Kentucky
How have we changed? • Agriculture and Engineering still vitally important • Growth of professional and technical colleges • Changes in Engagement • Consistent centrality of Arts and Sciences • Mandate for Top 20 status • Increased focus on student access and success
