  3. Expectations of Participation • Attendance at all sessions • Completion of assignments • Periodic evaluation • Survey in the spring • Preparation for discussion • Professional demeanor • Student pre/post test (5th and 8th grades)

Evaluation • Assessment of participant’s content knowledge • Survey of participant and control group • Case study of two to three participants • Focus group interview during Summer Institute (teachers and staff) • Assessment of student’s social studies knowledge • Pre and post-test given to students of participants and control teachers • Pre test administered by November 19

Key Findings from Last Year Fully 89% (to a great or moderate extent) reported that the BTH project improved their knowledge of American history—by furnishing them with in-depth information, by drawing on relationships between historical events, and by dispelling certain myths that they had previously held about historical events. Participants made significant gains in their knowledge about the Office of the Presidency and Inventors and Innovations. Over 75% of participants increased their fund of historical information for these content areas.

Key Findings from Last Year • All participants attested that their students showed an increased awareness of the relationship between history and other subjects; 17% of control teachers did so. • • Far many more participants than control teachers reported that students demonstrated improvement in their interpretation of primary source material (94% vs. 34%).
