  1. Is America a consumer society? By: Brooklyn Smout 1st Period

  2. American consumption: • Americans consume 24 % of the worlds energy. • We consume enough unneeded food to feed 80 million people daily. We also throw out 200,000 tons of edible food a day. • Food consumption: • Sugar consumption: 95 – 100 lbs. per person yearly • Meat consumption: 103 – 137 kg as a country

  3. Gross national products (GNP) • A GNP is a estimated measurement of a nations economy based on forms of production mainly substance production. • GNP can lead to a higher living quality. • All other things should be equal. • Most countries have switched to GDP (Gross Domestic Product) as a measurement of production. Mainly because it is easier to compare the economic activities.

  4. How much do we import? • The fastest growing import in 2011 was gum. At 151.3 % • The overall top US import from the world is Oil. Making up 20.5% of al imports to the us and costing $464.3 billion. • Less than 20% of our imports come from China.

  5. Consumer debts • In total, American consumers owe $11.38 trillion, a decrease of almost 3% from the year 2011 • The states with the highest consumer debts are: • Alaska • Wyoming • South Dakota • Colorado • Maryland

  6. Manufactured in the U.S. • There are 48,206 manufacturing companies in the U.S. • Claim of “Assembled in USA” • “Made in America” rules • All or virtually all produced in the United States

  7. Exports • Our NUMBER ONE EXPORT, that we ship out to other countries and around the world, is waste paper. Trash is the number one thing we send out into the world. • In 2012 we shipped out $1.48 trillion worth in goods around the world. • The top 5 countries we export to are: • China • Canada • Japan • The UK • Germany

  8. Is America a consumer society? • First of all, a consumer society is a term usually applied to “western” societies, this assumption is that they are increasingly organized around consumption of goods rather that the production of goods. • Americans are material lovers according to some, but others believe differently. • We take advantage of the opportunities we have to export and import things and frankly it is cheaper to import products.
