  2. STAFF ORGANIZATIONand RESPONSIBILITIES The activities of the staff focus on the function of assisting the Commander in making decisions. FM 101-5, 1997, p. 4-3

  3. THE STAFF SUPPORTSTHE COMMANDER BY... 1, COORDINATING PLANS, ACTIVITIES, AND OPERATIONS. 2. ADVISING THE COMMANDER IN PROFESSIONAL, TECHNICAL OR FUNCTIONAL AREAS. 3. CONTINUOUSLY COLLECTING, COLLATING, ANALYZING, AND DISSEMINATING INFORMATION GATHERED FROM ALL AVAILABLE RESOURCES. 4. PREPARING PLANS AND ORDERS AND SUPERVISING THE EXECUTION OF ORDERS ISSUED BY, OR IN THE NAME OF, THE COMMANDER. 5. PROVIDING THE COMMANDER (AND SUBORDINATE COMMANDERS) WITH “SITUATIONAL AWARENESS”

  5. THE BATTALION STAFF • Coordinating staff: • S1, S2, S3, S4, S6 (S5) • Special staff: • HHC CDR, AT PL, RECON PL, MTR PL, CHEMO, SURG/MED PL, SPT PL, ADO, ALO, FSO, EN PL, (Other Staff Members based on current task organization) • Personal staff: • CSM, CHAPLAIN FM 7-20, 1992, p. 2-5

COORDINATING STAFF S-1 (PERSONNEL OFFICER) S-2 (INTELLIGENCE OFFICER) S-3 (OPERATIONS OFFICER) S-4 (LOGISTICS OFFICER) S-5 (CIVIL MILITARY OPERATIONS OFFICER) S-6 (SIGNAL OFFICER) *AID THE COMMANDER BY COORDINATING THE PLANS, ACTIVITIES, AND OPERATIONS OF THE COMMAND. *RESPONSIBLE DIRECTLY TO THE BN XO.

  7. THE BATTALION XO • XO is “2IC” • XO coordinates and synchronizes the staff • During combat the XO synchronizes BOS systems and anticipates problems • Supervises CSS system “Chief of Staff” FM 7-20, 1992, pp. 1-4, 2-5, and B-1 thru B-2

  8. S1 • Responsible for all personnel matters • Supervises medical, legal, safety, and civil affairs • Operates from the CTCP; shares supervision of logistics with the S4 FM 7-20, 1992, pp. 8-2, and B-2 thru B-3 “Adjutant”

  9. S2 • Responsible for intelligence (collection and disemination) • Performs IPB with the CDR • Normally operates from the main CP “Intelligence Officer” FM 7-20, 1992, p. B-3

  10. S3 • CDR’s primary assistant in coordinating and planning the battle • Coordinates, plans for, and integrates all BOS assets • Prepares operations estimate and orders “Operations and Training Officer” FM 7-20, 1992, pp. B-3 thru B-4

  11. S4 • Determines CSS requirements and priorities • Develops CSS plans in concert with the tactical plan • OIC of the BN Combat Trains • Primary coordinator for the logistical staff “Logistics Officer” FM 7-20, 1992, p. B-4

  12. S6 • Advises the commander and staff on all commo matters including commo maint and EW • Assists S3 in determining locations for CPs • Prepares, writes the signal annex of the OPORD “Signal Officer” FM 7-20, 1992, p. B-4
