  3. What can trigger and inspection • parental complaints that had been referred to Ofsted • results from Parent View • any other issues brought to Ofsted’s attention, including from the local authority • school website, especially missing details about pupil premium

  4. Questions asked by inspectors • What do governors think will be the outcome of the inspection? What leads you to this conclusion? • How are governors involved in the life of the school? • Describe the impact of governors’ influence on a major area of the school’s policy or practice. What improvement can governors point to as an example of their most positive influence?

  5. Questions asked by inspectors • Give examples as to how governors have challenged the headteacher. Where will inspectors find evidence of this? • Which governors come into school regularly and what do they do? What impact does it have?

  6. Questions asked by inspectors • How often do governors visit classrooms and observe teaching and learning? How are the outcomes of these visits used to deepen other governors’ understanding of the school’s work?

  7. Questions asked by inspectors • How do governors ascertain parents’ and children’s views of the school’s provision? • How much money has the school received under Pupil Premium? What decisions have governors made about the deployment of these funds? What impact is the funding having or what arrangements are being made to judge impact? Where will inspectors find evidence of this?

  8. Questions asked by inspectors • How are governors involved in the headteacher’s performance management? Without revealing specific targets, tell me the broad areas the targets cover. Did the headteacher meet her targets in her last performance management?

  9. Questions asked by inspectors • How are governors involved in the performance management of the other staff? How do governors know that those on DHT, AHT, TLR and Upper Pay scales are being effectively managed and contributing effectively to improving provision and raising standards?

  10. Questions asked by inspectors • How many staff have been appointed to TLR positions or been admitted to Upper Pay scales since this headteacher has been in the school? How have governors been involved in those decisions?

  11. Questions asked by inspectors • How is the governing body managing its own professional development?
