EDF Group - 2005 • All electricity business chain, from production to trade of electricity • More and more active on natural gas • 130,776 MWe installed power • 1st electricity generator in Europe • 40.2 millions of customers (28 million in France) • 1st portofolio of customers in Europe for electricity • 161,560 employees • France, Italy, Great-Britain, Germany, … EDF R&D - Lausanne

EDF Group - 2005 • Used to be 100% state owned • Since 2005, 87.3% state owned • Many actions on social domain, a few examples: • Oct.2005 : signature of a contract with the French government fixing obligations toward public services • Jan.2005: signature of a SR framework agreement for EDF group • Screening of projects through a sustainable development grid • Our work on social LCA EDF R&D - Lausanne

  5. 2 Contract on public services / general interest EDF R&D - Lausanne

  6. Main content of the contract • Supply security: • EDF commits itself to be the supplier when no other can. Must invest in regions that are dependents on other regions • Must take care of the grid, maintain it and repair it, with respecting the environment • Good quality of electricity for all • Equal treatment and solidarity: • Same price for the transport of electricity for everyone • No abrupt raise of electricity price for household during the 5 next years • Solidarity toward the poorest : no electricity cut in winter • A remuneration for ensuring the public services EDF R&D - Lausanne

  8. 2 years of shared reflexion • A negociated approach • A framework in order to impulse new initiatives • Motivate the workers on concrete implementations • Increase the international perception of EDF employees of the Group • Directly negociated with employees and managers representatives of the main firms of EDF Group (even for China) 22 articles, 50 principles and commitments An implementation per firm or department Involvement of different stakeholders: managers, employees, local partners, NGOs EDF R&D - Lausanne

Content of EDF Group SR framework agreement • Based on Universal conventions and ILO Conventions • Themes: • Relationship of responsability between EDF group and the employees • Health, security, retirement, discriminations… • Relationship of responsability with our customers and contractors • Electricity for all • Respect of laws, health and safety …for contractors • Environment protection and promotion of energy efficiency • Commitment in the city life • Integration of handicapped persons • Involvement on action of general interest… • Governance principles • Transparency of information, dialogue… EDF R&D - Lausanne

Implementation of EDF Group SR framework agreement • 1st state of the art for every firm • Collection of best social behaviours • First results: • Though very different economic, social and cultural context, very good level for every firm • New initiatives are already on • Enlargement of social dialogue • Still need intern appropriation and more proximity EDF R&D - Lausanne

For 3 different purposes • Screening: • New projects on the production power plants • Ex: screening installation of a system for de-Noxification • Solutions that are proposed to our customers • Ex: screening a solution that would allow customers to have a better price during week-ends • Projects or state of the art of communities that we work with • Ex: screening of the setting up of a new transport system EDF R&D - Lausanne

  13. Content of the grids • Implemented after writing of the Agenda 21 • Based on a common framework with 4 pillars • Inspired by GRI, EDF Agenda 21 and specificities of each profession Depending on the use of the grid, it leads to a scoring per pillar EDF R&D - Lausanne

For an application in EDF Group • Part in UNEP-SETAC WG since 2004 • State of the art of the different ways of doing a social LCA in 2006 • Choice of a procedure to apply social LCA to the production of electricity on a specific EDF coal power plant • Application planned for 2007: • Should be a cradle to gate application • Based on all the production of 1 power plant and all the suppliers and contractors that are necessary to make it work, then converted to the functionnal unit of 1 MWh • Based on direct measures for the power plant • Based on direct measures and adaptation of public available measures for suppliers EDF R&D - Lausanne
