  4. Quality Assurance System of De La Salle University - Manila • Challenges • QA of staff – interpretation of provisions of Faculty Manual • Curriculum design – link to desired characteristics of graduates • Student assessment – lack of self and peer assessment

Strengths • HEIs with QA Systems • Hong Kong, Thailand, Taiwan • Government initiative • Most other HEIs have QA practices or components of the system • Tradition or culture of quality • Particular areas: faculty, curriculum, student activities • Centers for QA • Accreditation and monitoring activities by various agencies

Challenges • Setting up formal structures and systems • Strengthening young QA Centers/Offices • Developing a more cohesive and comprehensive QA System • Moving toward outcomes-based QA System • Defining and assessing outcomes in the context of the HEI’s vision-mission • Ownership of stakeholders (not burden but intrinsic to education) • “We have to do it or others will”

  7. Next Steps • Acquisition of competencies • Exposure of stakeholders to the modern concept of QA • Development of a framework for each institution

  8. How the ACUCA network can help • Identify experts: speakers, “auditors” • Build local competency • Mock audit: the experience of QA • Forums and workshops • Bring concept of QA to faculty and students • Discuss roles of stakeholders in the process • Discuss aspects of QA • Mobilize faculty

  9. How the ACUCA network can help • Collect links and resources for eventual sharing with members • Set-up e-group for QA persons of each institutions; links with certain websites
