BASELINE SURVEY Arusha 2011
Rationale BST is not implementing GSP near Arusha, a sensitization was viable. Usually a baseline survey has to be undertaken before intervention in a new region. Why FGD? • Follow up from capacity building • Situation analysis – knowledge of local situation • Language barrier
Methodology • 4 FGD sessions, 2 in each church Structure of the two groups
A closer look at ourrespondents… • Rural dwelling • Pastoralist community. • Most are married as young as 12 years old • All respondents are Christians • They guard their customs and traditions jealously • Men typically speak for women and make decisions in the family/community. • Most of them do not access medication from health centers they only believe in their own traditional herbs.
CARE AND SUPPORT FOR PLHIV • HIV testing is done in the hospital which is far from the village • One group has heard about ARVs and know that it prevents the virus from developing • Another group do not believe there is treatment for HIV • No HIV program in the church or community No HIV services provided in the community • No places in their community that provide care for PLHIV • No support groups • Only hold prayers , one group said: “we leave them to God”
BASIC KNOWLEDGE & INFORMATION ON HIV • Little knowledge on HIV. • There is a common belief that the community is free from HIV • Information received is from the hospital • They have not received any training on HIV & AIDS before GSP.
ATTITUDES • One group strongly believe that PLHIV should not hold positions in church or in the community. The other group is accommodative. • They generally don’t believe that they can contract HIV They believe HIV is • a punishment from God • a curse • a consequence of sin • bad luck “It is a special disease not like any other”
CULTURAL PRACTICES • Polygamy • Sex out of wedlock is acceptable: “Kuchomamkuki” • Wife inheritance • Fighting using sharp weapons • FGM
CONCLUSION • They have little knowledge about HIV and AIDS and need more and accurate information. • Most of them are illiterate and cannot read HIV information. • They believe in their cultural norms, some of which are risky • Due to sensitivity of the topic and nature of the group there may be need to combine FGD with individual interviews or self administered questionnaires. Most were too shy to speak openly. They welcome GSP “come every week” they said.
ACKOWLEDGEMENT • Respondents • Moderators • Note takers • Organizers: Kofi, Konstanse & Maxime • BST • All JPR participants
