Testing & Trials • James 1:2-4 • 2     Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, •      3     knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. •      4     And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

  4. Wealth • James 2:1-4 • 1     My brethren, do not hold your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ with an attitude of personal favoritism.    2     For if a man comes into your assembly with a gold ring and dressed in fine clothes, and there also comes in a poor man in dirty clothes,   3     and you pay special attention to the one who is wearing the fine clothes, and say, “You sit here in a good place,” and you say to the poor man, “You stand over there, or sit down by my footstool,”     4     have you not made distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil motives?

  5. Wealth • James 5:1-41     Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries which are coming upon you.     2     Your riches have rotted and your garments have become moth-eaten. 3     Your gold and your silver have rusted; and their rust will be a witness against you and will consume your flesh like fire. It is in the last days that you have stored up your treasure!  4     Behold, the pay of the laborers who mowed your fields, and which has been withheld by you, cries out against you; and the outcry of those who did the harvesting has reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth.

  6. Faith v. Works • James 1:26-27 • 26     If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this man’s religion is worthless. •      27     Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.

  7. Faith v. Works • James 2:24 •      24     You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone. • For James faith manifests itself to be real by its works. • For more work on this see Moo on Romans 211-117

  8. The Tongue • The “World’s Smallest Troublemaker” • James 3:5 •      5     So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things. See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire!

  9. Wisdom • James 3:13 • 13     Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom.

  10. The Lord’s Return • James 5:7-8 7     Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. The farmer waits for the precious produce of the soil, being patient about it, until it gets the early and late rains. •      8     You too be patient; strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is near.

  11. The Organization of James • James is not structured like an “outline.” • James can sometimes be seen as a sort of “ring pattern.” • As with much other Greek literature, finding the center is helpful. • It may be that James is written to comment upon the Sermon on the Mount.
