Making it easy for young people to join a club Suzy Broadhead – Youth Sport Trust Paul Foster – Sele School, Hertfordshire With poster case study contributions from Penryn College, Cornwall & Salford Academy
OUTCOMES Understand how schools, National Governing Bodies of Sport and community sports clubs work together to create a seamless pathway from school sport to community sport for all young people.
Overview - School to Club Pathways 24% of secondary pupils that represented their schools in Level 2 and 3 School Games were “not involved in local club sport but would like to be”
THE CHALLENGE • Lead YST Partner School to work with 2 other local Partner Schools to - • Devise and deliver an innovative plan to build a pathway from school to community sport to support the transition of pupils from . • Think differently, • Plan according to the individual needs of pupils and the schools location • Develop strong links to local sports clubs
WHAT WAS ACHIEVED • 62 Schools involved in the work • 2419 young people of which 55% transitioned into a local community sports club. • Average rate of young people transitioning to clubs is 26% • 21 different sports involved
SELE SCHOOL – CLUB PATHWAYS • Employed a local basketball coach to lead two lunch time sessions. • Followed by a “bridge” club on a Friday • Precedes clubs session so that pupils can see the standards required and try to attract pupils to community club.
OUR ASPIRATIONS & OUTCOMES • Improve the skill level of our pupils • Pupils and parents were not hindered by the cost or transport to and from a club.
IMPACT Huge development in the skill level of all the students. “The pathway to club sessions have been fantastic, even better than I expected! We have already had a few boys trial out for club teams (and made the team ) and also had a few boys come to our Academy sessions at Presdales School.” Sele - 2 of their players being selected for East Herts Youth Games. Richard Hale School - had 4 players trial out at Harlow Hawks U15 National league team and made the team. From the YR7 & 8 Group - 4 players make the East Herts Youth Games and 1 player start Academy sessions. Chauncy School - with 2 players starting Academy sessions and 3 players making the East Herts YG team.
KEYS TO SUCCESS • Targeting a cohort of students that had that initial enjoyment of sport and keen to take it further • 50% of these students on Free School Meals and unable to afford to participate in community clubs. • The quality of the coaching staff.
SUSTAINING CLUB LINKS • Increased coaching time in the school to target year 7s. • Coach has set up a new local club which hasn’t existed in Hertford/ Ware for many years now. This has many pupils involved from Pathways project.
NEXT STEPS • Keep the pupils enthused by the sport. • Helped by the timing of the year ..district leagues start in October. • Trips to see live games • Main aim is to get students to the local club by themselves.
NEXT STEPS • Satellite Club Development – Sport England Youth Strategy • Opportunities for schools to work with NGBs to develop on-site club opportunities led by local clubs • Your Next Steps?
