  2. Identify Handling Characteristics of the Vehicle • Steering • Position of driver’s seat • Mirror adjustments • Clearances around the vehicle • Brakes

Vehicle Pre-start Inspections • Always check the following are fully operational and free of damage before operating the vehicle: • Steering • Lights • Tyres for tread depth and damage • Correct tyre inflation • Oil and water levels • Clean windscreen • Windscreen washers • Seat and steering wheel adjustment • Side and rear view mirrors • Seat belts • Brakes

  4. Identify Driving Hazards • The hazards we may be faced with include but are not limited to: • Slippery roads; • Loose gravel; • Mud or oil patches • Bad weather or sun glare • Livestock; • Aircraft • Mechanical failure; and • Pedestrians

Road Safety • Always obey the road rules when driving vehicles and remember: • Look ahead and check your mirrors regularly; • Drive within the speed limit; • Anticipate other drivers’ movements; • Obey signs and road markings; • Keep both hands on the wheel; • Keep a safe distance between your car and the next vehicle; • Drive at a consistent speed; • Indicate well in advance of your planned turn; • Only overtake when you have clear visibility; • Drive in the left lane unless overtaking; and • Do not assume anything and be courteous and patient.

Road Safety • Do not drive the vehicle unless you hold a current driver’s licence • Do not use a hand held mobile phone while driving; • Do not eat or drink while driving; • Do not operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and drugs; • Do not turn without indicating; • Playing loud music which drowns out sirens and horns is prohibited while driving; • Do not operate a vehicle while fatigued; • Avoid sudden braking and lane changing; and

  7. Vehicle Control Vehicle control means you are always in control. You anticipate hazards and therefore avoid the need for sudden manoeuvres that could cause you to loose control of the vehicle. • This means you should: • Avoid the edges of the road; • Avoid sudden braking; • Drive well within your lane; • Keep well left on the crest of hills and sharp corners; • Avoid “U” turns; • Accelerate slowly on wet roads; • Drive slower on gravel roads and slow down on corners; and • Lower your headlights high beam so you won’t blind oncoming drivers.
