Introduction • This presentation will examine how we can provide unique learning experiences in the classroom using assistive technology to help students with learning disabilities share their knowledge and intelligence with others.
What is a Learning Disability? • Describes a variety of problems in acquiring, storing, and retrieving information. • Students have difficulty taking information in through the senses and then processing the information. • Students usually have average or above average cognitive skills.
Four Categories of Learning Disabilities • According to http://www.washington.edu/doit/Brochures/Technology/atpwld.html • Spoken language (listening & speaking) • Written language (reading,writing, & spelling) • Arithmetic (calculation & concepts) • Reasoning (organization/integration of ideas and thoughts)
How can we help students succeed? • Additional teaching strategies • Modifications and/or accommodations to learning programs. • Assistive technology can be used as a support
What is Assistive Technology? • According to http://www.gatfl.org/ldguide/default.htm, assistive technology is any item, piece of equipment, or product that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the abilities of an individual with disabilities.
Assistive Technology- What tools are available? • Low and High Technology Items • Low Tech- post it notes, highlighters • High Tech- Software and other technology tools
Organizational Software • Concept mapping software presents ideas/concepts in a physical manner. • Representations can be connected with arrows to show the relationship. • http://www2.edc.org/ncip/library/wp/Profile.htm, presents Inspiration Software
Inspiration Software • Students can create concept maps • Convert maps to outline form • Strategies for using Inspiration in the classroom • Study strategies using Inspiration
Improving Writing Skills • Word Processing Software- grammar/spellcheckers, dictionaries, thesaurus programs • Talking Word Processors- auditory feedback as the student types. • Word Prediction Software- Augments spelling and syntax and allows students to find words and make predictions.

Word Q Software • http://specialed.about.com/od/assistivetechnology/, provided a free trial for Word Prediction Software (Word Q) • Will also read material back to student • Works on any Windows Software
Speech Recognition Technology • Takes the spoken word using a microphone and converts it into a machine readable format • Students can view their words in written text • Great for students who can’t use keyboard. • More information http://www.washington.edu/doit/Brochures/Technology/atpwld.html
Text to Speech Applications • Used to increase learning of struggling readers • Allows students to experience text both visually and aurally. • Ability to highlight text as it is read. (increased attention and comprehension) • Students can proofread their own work by having it read back to them.
Other Assistive Technology Supports • According to http://www.washington.edu/doit/Brochures/Technology/atpwld.html, other supports include: • Calculators • Talking Calculators- have voice output that provides feedback. User can hear input errors. (good for students who reverse numbers when reading)
Other Assistive Technology Supports • Franklin Electronic Dictionary- renders phonetic spelling into correctly spelled words. • Tape Recorders- can be used to assist students with listening difficulties • Internet- many resources and free software trials.
