  2. World Future Council – Voice of Future Generations The World Future Council endeavors to bring the interests of future generations to the centre of policy making. We inform policy makers about future just policies and advise them on how to implement these. Political solutions for the challenges of our time exist.

The aim of the award is to raise global awareness for these exemplary policies and to speed up policy action towards just, sustainable and peaceful societies. The Future Policy Award is the first award that celebrates policies rather than people on an international level.

Key Features ofRwanda‘sForestPolicy Key features: • Massive national reforestation activities, promoting the planting of indigenous species on all suitable land • Education on forestry issues which is integrated into school curricula and schools involved in reforestation • Promotion of wood-saving techniques and alternative energy sources • Development of agro-forestry to improve soil and crop productivity, create rural income-generation and satisfy local timber demands • Protection of indigenous plant species used for local traditional medicines

A ban on plasticbags • Rwanda outlawed plastic bags back in 2008 • Umuganda 2005: Public was shocked after collectingbags • raising public awareness: experiences were collected and retold • including the media: accompanied by a nationwide television and radio campaign against plastic bags, including films onbusses and planes • incentives for the economy to produce alternatives (cotton, palm or banana leaves) • laws and regulations including all public institutions.

  10. FOREST POLICIES AS A DRIVER FOR CHANGE National forest policies can have great impact if they address complex cross-sector challenges on the ground. National forest policies in Africa can be a key driver in addressing the challenge of governing landscapes because they provide a mechanism to involve local people. 17 November 2014 12
