Four young men close to Vera go to war in 1914-- --Roland --Vera’s brother, Edward --friends, Geoffrey Thurlow and Victor Richardson. Vera joins Voluntary Aid Detachment (military nurses).
Vera serves with the V.A.D. throughout the war in England, Malta and France. Vera and Roland become engaged in 1915. Roland dies in December, 1915 Geoffrey Thurlow dies in April, 1917. Victor Richardson dies in June, 1917. Edward dies in June, 1918
Testament of Youth Vera writes an autobiographical account of her wartime experiences when she returns to Oxford after the war. Goal is to “tell history in terms of personal life.” Testament of Youth, is first published in 1933 and is today acclaimed as Vera’s best work. As an adult, Vera becomes known as an outspoken feminist and pacifist.
