  2. In 1800, only 5% of the world’s population lived in urban areas (city areas). Most people were rural.

  3. This crowds them into only 3% of the earth’sland. Today, over 50% of the world’s population lives in urban areas.

  4. causes of urbanization • Poverty in rural areas; lack of jobs • Violence in rural areas (limited police protection, battles between groups wanting political power) • Lack of services (water, electricity, education) • Lack of amenities (parks, shopping, entertainment)

  11.  Slum development: Rapid growth of slums with noservices – no electricity, no plumbing, no trash pickup Calcutta, India

  12. Unemployment: City businesses don’t have enoughjobs to employ people as fast as they arrive. So they earn money howevertheycan.

  13.  Health problems: overcrowding, with limited city services, leads to unhealthy lackofsanitation.
