  1. Open Space Technology Training September 13 - 16, 2000

  2. Coffee Breaks – Inspiration for a new Meeting Technology

  3. What OST Provides • Cost efficient method for engaging groups in collective transformation. • Unleashes pent up passion. • Enough structure to release creativity and freedom. • An opportunity for revival of organization’s spirit

  4. The Facilitator’s Role: Create and hold space and time

  5. The Goal is to be . . . Totally Present & Absolutely Invisible

  6. The Facilitator . . . • Works with Sponsors on creating Theme and Givens. • Keeps the space as “open” as possible. • Stays out of the way of the participants. • Focuses the participants on the Theme. • Follows up with Sponsors on results of the meeting.

  7. Be Open to Outcome

  8. Past is Over ~ Future is Not Yet Soooo, whadda we got? NOW!

  9. The Object is to turn NOW!!! now into

  10. By Opening Space - we expand our “NOW”

  11. Spirited OST Facilitation: Thanks to Angeles Arrien, The Four-Fold Way

  12. Getting Ready . . . • You need: • Clarity • Focus • Presence

  13. OPENING SPACE for CHAOS And CREATIVITY

  14. CHAOS??? Yikes!! CHAOS = CONTROL

  15. The illusion of Order . . . All is right with the world. “We are already in a state of CHAOS.” M. Gorbachev

  16. Chaos couldn’t be more natural . . . In fact, when you achieve biological equilibrium, you’re dead.

  17. Chaos is . . . • Part of the natural order • The state that preceeds transformation • The catalyst for a higher state of function

  18. Someday, things will get back to normal . . . NOT!!!

  19. Remember . . . “Necessity is the mother of invention!” An original quote by L. Labron

  20. Famous messes in history: Arthur Fleming forgot to clean his petri dishes - bacteria were everywhere - except near mould! In the late 30’s, Kleist and Moore decided to fuse glass blocks with a blow-torch. The mess that resulted heralded the “invention” of fibreglass.

  21. FACT: World-changing breakthroughs are more often the result of accidents and inspiration than planning.

  22. Our perceptions of time and space have changed.

  23. In the beginning . . . There was nothing . . . Only space for the dance of CHAOS and ORDER.

  24. Complex Adaptive System

  25. Conditions for Self-Organization(as articulated by Stuart Kauffman at the Santa Fe Institute) • Nutrient environment • Diversity/complexity • Drive for improvement • Sparse connections • Edge of chaos

  26. Conditions for using OST • Real issue of concern • Diversity of players • Complexity of elements • Presence of passion (or Conflict!) • Needs immediate decision/action • Nobody knows the answers

  27. Facilitator as Midwife . . . Your role, like that of the midwife, is to assist those doing the active work of creating - to hold the emerging infant, to provide a safe landing. The process, like birth, is natural and self-directing.

  28. Facilitator as Shaman The Journey to Transformation . . . Walk the circle Hold the space Begin in Chaos Pass through Order

  29. The Dance of Chaos • Learning • Self-Organization • Transformation

  30. Opening Space for Spirit

  31. The Spirit/Organization Life-Cycle Decline Maturity Growth Change or Die Spirit Birth Organization

  32. Development vs Transformation

  33. The Transformative Cycle Spirit Inspiration happens when spirit appears CHAOS Vision Imagination Wonder Shock/Anger Denial Memories Open Space

  34. The transformative cycle is much like the grief cycle Shock & Anger Denial Acceptance Despair & Silence Memories

  35. Somewhere between memories and despair, all the stories need to be told . . . then silence opens the space for transformation

  36. Wonder plus Imagination VISION

  37. Vision is born in the midst of destruction . . . It’s always messy.

  38. Stages of Development Bliss Tight quarters Toxic State Down the tubes

  39. BLISS Plenty of room to grow!

  40. Tight quarters Feeling pretty crowded!

  41. Toxic state illness angst People start to crash and burn stress

  42. Down the tubes!

  43. It’s a little like birth Toxic state Bliss Tight quarters

  44. Headin’ to the NEW! Same old stuff vision Vision Imagination Wonder Shock/Anger Denial Memories Open Space

  45. Transformation is seldom planned, sequential or orderly (but it IS predictable)

  46. TRANSFORMATION Individual Organizational Spirit Inspired Soul Interactive Intellect Proactive Mind Responsive Reactive Body Ken Wilbur Harrison Owen

  47. The Reactive Organization Like an entrepreneur on the first day of business.

  48. Responsive Organization Nice, orderly, predictable - like a Ma and Pa store . . . But NOT well positioned to respond to change.

  49. Proactive Organization Any well managed corporation - like a well maintained machine, it is controlled and efficient - until it loses control!!
