  2. How do you feel after drinking a Sugary drink?

  3. Why should you rethink your drink? • From 1989 to 2008, calories from sugary beverages increased by 60% in children ages 6 to 11. • Children and youth in the US average 224 calories per day from sugary beverages. • Beverages count for almost half (47%) of all added sugars consumed by US population. • One study found that for each additional 12-ounce soda children consumed each day, the odds of becoming obese increased by 60%. • Tennessee now has the highest rate of childhood obesity in the United States!

  4. Why are sugary drinks bad for you? • Can lead to weight gain • Do not contain essential nutrients that help you grow • Can cause cavities and tooth decay • Leads to a “sugar crash”- sugary drinks give you a short burst of energy and then make you feel tired or even grouchy • Increased heart disease risk and of developing Type 2 Diabetes • Can be addicting

  5. How much added sugar should you have? 1 can of coke has 10 teaspoons or 40 grams  of added sugar Youth should have no more than 6 teaspoons or 24 grams of ADDED SUGAR per day.

  6. What’s in my drink • Look at the nutrition label when choosing a drink to see how much sugar it contains. Remember you should be having no more than 6 teaspoons (24 grams) of added sugar per day. • One teaspoon of sugar = 4 grams of sugar

  7. What’s in my drink activity 0 grams ÷ 4 = 0 teaspoons

  8. What’s in my drink activity 21 grams ÷ 4 = 5 ¼ teaspoons

  9. What’s in my drink activity 33 grams ÷ 4 = 8 ¼ teaspoons *Chocolate milk does contain vitamins, minerals, and protein BUT it also has added sugar so be mindful of how often you are choosing this as a drink.

  10. What’s in my drink activity 34 grams ÷ 4 = 8 ½ teaspoons *100% orange juice has no added sugar and does contain vitamins and minerals. However, it still contains a high amount of sugar to be consuming in one drink. A better option is to eat an orange which contains all the same vitamins and minerals but has fiber and less sugar.

  11. What’s in my drink activity 39 grams ÷ 4 = 9 ¾ teaspoons

  12. What’s in my drink activity 40 grams ÷ 4 = 10 teaspoons

  13. How long does it take to burn off a coke? Let’s get up and move!

  14. How long does it take to burn off a coke? • 1 minute of jumping jacks = 5 Calories • You would have to do 28 minutes of jumping jacks to burn off the empty calories in 1 can of coke

  15. What are empty calories? • Empty calories is a term that describes foods that… • Contain no nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, fiber and essential fatty acids • Contain extra calories that lead to weight gain • Contain high amounts of sugar that is stored as fat • SUGARY DRINKS ARE FILLED WITH EMPTY CALORIES • No nutritional value • No protein • No healthy fats • No fiber • No vitamins or minerals 39 Grams of sugar per serving

  16. Why should you drink water? • Protects your body organs and tissues • Carries nutrients and oxygen to all the cells in your body • Helps you fight off illness • Helps you digest your food and get rid of waste • Regulates your body temperature • Hydrates your skin and hair

  17. Recommended Daily Amount of Water • 5 glasses for 5 to 8 year olds • 7 glasses for 9 to12 year olds • 8 to 10 glasses for 13+ years  You should drink more water when you’re exercising or on a hot day. We often don’t feel thirsty even when our bodies need fluid, so it’s a good idea to drink water regularly throughout the day.

  18. How can you drink more water? • Bring a water bottle to school everyday! • Drink a glass of water with every meal • Refill your water bottle at the hydration stations during your breaks • Drink water after PE class and recess • Flavor it up! Add fresh lemon, lime, mint, etc. to your water
