Julius II led armies against his enemies, disgusting those who viewed the pope as a spiritual not a military leader Many church officials were concerned with money & used their church offices to advance their careers & their wealth. Many priests seemed ignorant of their spiritual duties. People were craving assurance of their salvation. According to church practice at the time, a person could gain an indulgence- release from all or part of the punishment for sin. The church also sold indulgences. Revolutions! for 500 Answer: A number of inventions including the caravel, magnetic compass, lateen sail, astrolabe, telescope, microscope, and the printing press led to improved scientific discoveries. Copernicus declared the Earth rotated on its axis and proposed that the Sun was the center of the universe rather than the Earth. Kepler confirmed the sun was at the center and took it a step further declaring the orbits of the planets were elliptical rather than circular. Galileo took it even further making observations of the heavens including mountains on the moon and the four moons of Jupiter. These new scientific observations challenged Europeans view of the world. Many felt threatened that if they did not understand the world around them, how could anything be certain?
