Which ecosystem has more biodiversity? Think- Write down you answer on pg.81 and explain what biodiversity means Pair- share with your elbow partner you answer and reasoning Share- share with the class your answer and reasoning 1 2
Species: Group of organisms that can interbreed. The more species in an ecosystem, the more stable and healthy the ecosystem.
Biodiversity Bio= Life Diverse= Different Variety of life in one area; the # of species in that area.
Check for Understanding • Where do you see the most biodiversity? • Why do you think it has the most biodiversity? • Where do you see the least biodiversity? • Why do you think it has the least biodiversity?
Measuring Biodiversity • Species richness- # of different species • Species evenness- # of individuals per species • Genetic diversity- varieties of individuals in a species
Which has more Species Richness? Both! = 7 Species
Biodiversity lessens the threat • Higher chance for survival • Only some would die but the rest of the species would live. • Genetics of certain individuals allow it to survive better. They will have offspring. Natural Threats Predation, Natural Catastrophes, Social Changes and Genetic Inconsistencies can kill a whole species or a large group of individuals.
Without Biodiversity • Extinction would occur • Loss of resources (food, medicine, shelter)
Limited resources- not enough for everyone • Overexploitation- killing or harvesting and over selling • Introduction of non-native species. What threatens Biodiversity? These are things that are lessening our biodiversity amongst living and nonliving organisms
