Monday 12th March 20189:15am + 3pm KS1 Meeting Rebecca Brown Assistant Head teacher
Outline • What are SATs? • An outline of the tasks and tests • Teacher assessment • Assessment reporting • The results • What you can do to help Individual children will not be discussed.
What are SATs? • Children are assessed in;ReadingWritingMathematics Grammar, punctuation and spelling. • All are tested except for writing, which is teacher assessed across all of the subjects.
Reading • Children will be tested on their reading comprehension. • Children will have a booklet containing a story and some information writing, which they will read and then answer questions about.
Reading • Paper 2 will be longer. • Children will read a booklet and then use this to answer questions in a separate booklet.
Writing • Your child will be assessed by their teacher, who will look at a number of pieces of writing they are completing independently in class. • Teachers will be looking for consistency.
Things we will be looking for: • Capital letters, full stops and finger spaces. • Different forms of sentences: questions, statements, commands, exclamations. (?!) • Adjectives (clap clap things) • Past and present tense consistently. • Connectives (and, so, but, because etc.) • Good spelling • Contractions spelled correctly (I’m, won’t, didn’t) • Adding suffixes (-full, ing) • Neat, joined up writing.
Spelling • Children will be asked to spell 20 words. • These will be put into sentences so that they understand which word to spell (their, there, they’re) • The class teacher will read the spellings to the class. • The Wednesday spelling test that we have been doing has the same format.
Grammar and Punctuation • This paper will focus on the children’s knowledge of grammar, punctuation and vocabulary. • The grammar homework that we send every week should be really useful!
Maths • Children will work through 2 booklets of maths questions covering work they have learnt this year. • The first will be a mental arithmetic paper, where they will be asked to answer questions using their number facts (number bonds, times tables, knowledge of inverse) • They will be allowed a ruler.
Maths • The second will be a reasoning paper, covering things like: • Number • Shape • Time • Problem solving • Measure • They will be allowed a ruler to help them.
Assessment reporting • Scaled scores are given, the expected standard is 100. The marks will be released in June. • If children are slightly below, they will be Working towards the expected standard • If children are in line with age related expectations, they will be Working at the expected standard • Children working above their peers will be Working at greater depth
The Results • Results are reported to the Local Education Authority (Lewisham). • An overall result will be made available with yearly reports.
What can you do to help? • Read together every day and ask questions about the story. • Use number problems in every day life, at the shops, on the bus, telling the time etc. • Encourage your child to do homework when it is given. • Encourage your child to practise spellings for Friday’s spelling test. • Help your child to be ready to learn and not tired when they come to school – early to bed on school nights and a healthy breakfast each morning. • Good attendance and punctuality. • Continue to work on targets set at parent’s evening.
