  1. Circulatory System By: Tayla Creed, Monique Jackson and Simone Hoaten

  2. The Circulatory System

  3. To carry digested food from the small intestine to all areas in the body which need it. • To carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. • To aid the disposal of all waste from the body. • To distribute heat. • To fight disease by using white blood cells to fight off infection

  4. Main organs of the system • Heart • Veins • Arteries • Lungs

  5. <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 The heart

  6. Functions of the heart • The hearts main function is to pump the blood within the body throughout the places in the body which need it. • The heart constantly purifies, receives and distributes blood. • The heart is separated into four chambers, each of them perform their own function independently, therefore the heart is able to receive and distribute blood at the same time. • The four chambers are: • The left atrium • The right atrium • The left ventricle • The right ventricle.

  7. Veins and arteries

  8. DIFFERENCES BETWEEN ARTERIES AND VEINS ARTERIES VEINS Carry blood to the heart Have thin walls Do not have a pulse Near surface of the skin Have valves to stop backflow of blood Vein branch at the beginning, into tin venules which join capillaries • Carry blood away from the heart • Have thick muscular walls • Have a pulse • Deep under skin • Have no valves • Arteries branch at their ends, into tiny arterioles those then join capillaries

  9. Main function of Lungs • There are 2 lungs in the human body • They supply oxygen to the heart. • The intake of air while breathing is carried out by the lungs, and this oxygen is then added into the blood and then transported to the heart.

  10. Two illnesses or diseases That can happen in the Circulatory system: • Heart Attack • Hole in the Heart

  11. Heart attack

  12. Heart attack

  13. Heart Attack

  14. Heart Attack • Coronary Heart Disease is a condition in which a waxy substance called plaque builds up inside the coronary arteries. These arteries supply oxygen-rich blood to your heart • Plaque builds up along the course of an artery and narrow the channel through which blood flows. This is called Atherosclerosis. • If the artery becomes too narrow, it cannot supply enough blood to the heart muscle when it becomes stressed. • If the clot becomes large enough, it can completely block blood flow through a coronary artery. • If the blockage isn't treated quickly, the portion of heart muscle fed by the artery begins to die. • The heart muscle will ache if it doesn't get blood supply. This ache or pain is called angina. • If the plaque ruptures, a small blood clot can form within the blood vessel, acting like a dam and acutely blocking the blood flow beyond the clot. • When that part of the heart loses its blood supply completely, the muscle dies. • Healthy heart tissue is replaced with scar tissue. • This is called a heart attack

  15. Hole in the heart

  16. Hole in heart

  17. What is a hole in the heart? • Holes in the heart are problems with the heart's structure and this happens at birth. • These defects change the flow of blood through the heart. • The heart has two sides, separated by an inner wall called the septum.

  18. About Hole in heart • Right side of heart: • Receives oxygen-poor blood from the body • Left side of heart: • Receives oxygen- Rich blood from the lungs and pumps it into the body The septum prevents mixing of blood between the two sides of the heart. However, some babies are born with holes in the upper or lower septum.
