F - Visual or Performing Art 1 year G - College Prep Elective 1 year • Entrance Exams SAT/ACT * Must earn a “C = College” or better to satisfy subject requirements

University of California“A–G” Subject Requirements • To satisfy the “A-G” requirements the courses must appear on SYHS UC approved course list • Course list can be found in the Registration Guide on the Guidance page at syvpirates.org • All certified courses have a (P) next to the title on transcript and registration guide • Only underlined courses on the SYHS UC approved course lists will be assigned extra honors credit (weighted grade) 11th grade Honors and all AP Courses

Grade Point Average (GPA) College Admissions • CSU/UC – weighted 10-11th “A-G” GPA (Cal Poly 9-11) Class rank not used for admissions • Private colleges – cumulative (9-12th) grade point average will use 9-12th class rank • 2 year colleges – do not consider GPA, rank or require SAT/ACT for admissions

Additional Admission Factors CSU: No essays or Letters of Recommendation UC: Students required to respond to interview style prompts No Letters of Recommendation (*Berkeley possible exception) Extracurricular activities (sports, clubs, work, community service etc.) PRIVATE colleges: Will require essays and Letters of Recommendation Extracurricular activities (sports, clubs, work, community service, etc.)

College Admission Exams • PSAT – Preliminary SAT used as a predictor for SAT scores, given once a year - next date Sat., October 19, 2019 • SAT Reasoning Test – Recommended Junior Year Reading/Writing (200-800 scale) Math (200-800 scale) Essay (optional – 2-8 scale) • SAT Subject Tests – May be recommended by some schools/majors • ACT – Also fulfills exam requirement, optional essay max score 36

  14. Sophomore Year - Courses Offerings • English – Honors CP 2, CP English 2, Comp. Eng. 2 • Math – Math 101, 201, Honors 201 • Science – Chemistry, Honors Chemistry or Chem. and AgriScience • Social Science– World Culture or AP Euro • World Lang./Elective– Spanish 1, 2 (H) or 3 (H), Beg. or Adv. Spanish Sp. Speakers or elective • Fine Arts/CTE or Elective • PE - required if CA Fitness Test is not passed. • Every season of sport completed = 2.5 credits of PE

Course selection tips • All Honors and AP course have pre-requisites • (usually A or B in prior year’s course) • Summer school can be taken to improve “D” grades and retake failed academic classes • Summer school cannot be taken to make up C or better grades or to meet the pre-requisites for Honors or AP Courses

REGISTRATION 2019-20 • Packets will be mailed– Early March 2019 • Students will bring their “Course Request Sheet” – Yellow sheet during the window of mid-March – Counselors will visit English classes to collect these forms and answer any questions. • In the summer (third week of July), you or your student will be able to pick up a list of the courses for 2019-20. If there are any The deadline to make ELECTIVE changes is August 7, 2019. • Academic Level change window – within first 6 weeks (for example – Honors English 2 to CP English 2).
