“Inside Cells” Notes 10-3-2013
Organelles • Tiny structures inside cell • Have specific functions
1. Cell Wall • Rigid • Surrounds plant cells • NOT in animal cells • Protects & supports
2. Cell Membrane • Controls what goes in & out • Both animal & plant cells
3. Nucleus • Cell’s control center • Chromatin or chromosomes – contain genetic material • “Brain” of the cell
4. Mitochondria • Convert energy in food molecules to energy the cell can use to carry out its functions • “Powerhouse” of the cell
5. Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) • Carry proteins and other material from one part of cell to another • Maze of passageways
6. Ribosomes • Make proteins • Small!
7. Golgi Bodies • Package materials and distribute them to other parts of the cell • “mail room” of the cell
8. Chloroplasts • Capture sun’s energy & use it to make food for cell
9. Vacuoles • Storage areas • Large in plants, small in animals
10. Lysosomes • Break down materials • “clean-up crew”
