WSU C2 Warriors College Experience • Goals • To Promote WSU and the Partner Programs • Give Students an Intense College Experience to better prepare them • Empower and Educate Students on Diabetes • Career Exploration • Learn to Study and Live in unique and sometime uncomfortable situations • Teachers/Counselors: To allow Secondary teachers the experience to see how what they do has an impact on college learning • Teachers/Counselors: To better promote health care IPE and Wayne State University to their students • Teachers/Counselors: Strengthen the linkage between regular school and the C2 Pipeline Program

WSU C2 Warriors College Experience • Academic Success Center • Morning sessions at the WSU C2 Pipeline Warriors College Experience will be overseen by the Wayne State University Academic Success Center. These sessions intend to expose high school seniors to some of the skills an incoming college freshman may find helpful. Students will attend Article Reading Lessons, classes highlighting concentration and effective listening techniques, learn how to cope with stress and procrastination and attend test preparation skills seminars. Additionally, members of the WSU Libraries Department will guide the students in proper researching techniques. Several members of the Counseling and Psychological Services Center will be present to discuss topics such as Academic Anxiety and Conflict Management. One of the highlights of the morning sessions is the Student Panel. During this time, the high school seniors attending the WSU C2 Pipeline Warriors College Experience will have the opportunity interact with several current and former WSU students and their college experiences, tips and advice.

WSU C2 Warriors College Experience Nursing Students participating in the Nursing track of the WSU C2 Pipeline Warriors College Experience will become familiar with the nurse’s role in diabetes through the lifespan approach. Students will begin by learning about the disease and how nurses are involved in the care of a diabetic. From there, a new age group will be introduced each session. In addition to discussing the health implications of diabetes during that time of life, students will explore the psychological, cultural, and spiritual and lifestyle complications a patient with diabetes may experience. During the eight sessions, students will have the opportunity to explore the function of the pancreas through dissection, monitor glucose and insulin levels, learn how to give an insulin injection and use a monofilament testing device to assess neuropathy. As a final activity, students will be given patient situations and work as teams to develop the best care plan for that patient.

WSU C2 Warriors College Experience Engineering Students participating in the Engineering track of the WSU C2 Pipeline Warriors College Experience will have the opportunity to see how the medical and engineering fields work hand in hand. During the first week of instruction, students will be introduced to the role of glucose and insulin. Throughout the rest of the week, students will discuss the role of engineering and technology as they relate to glucose monitoring, insulin delivery and living with diabetes. During the second week of instruction, the focus will switch to living with diabetes. Students will be exposed to the technology behind prosthetic limbs. Once familiar with this technology, students will utilize AutoDesk software to design a 3D prosthetic limb model. Towards the end of the week, students will have the opportunity to utilize a 3D printer to replicate the prosthetic limb model they designed.

WSU C2 Warriors College Experience Medicine Students participating in the Medicine track of the WSU C2 Pipeline Warriors College Experience will be exposed to analysis, communication and social determinants of health as they relate to the medical complications of diabetes. Once students are introduced to the basics of Type 2 Diabetes, they will attend classes with topics such as Diet and Exercise, the Cardiovascular System, Diabetes and Ophthalmology, the Renal System and Neurologic Complications. Students will be responsible for tracking and comparing their own blood sugar levels, examine the heart in real time using ultrasound techniques, visit the Kresge Eye Institute, discuss kidney functions and participate in sensory exams. To culminate the experience, students will take a field trip to the Kado Clinical Skills Center to work with endocrinology fellows and experience the clinical setting.

WSU C2 Warriors College Experience Social Work Students participating in the Social Work track of the WSU C2 Pipeline Warriors College Experience will be exposed to the profession of Social Work, as well as roles social workers play within the healthcare arena. During the eight sessions, students will participate in lessons that will provide an opportunity to experience field work, research, policy, human behavior and social work practice as it relates to diabetes. Activities scheduled include guest presentations with social work professionals, a visit from Whole Foods offering a healthy snack demonstration, completion of family genograms and eco maps, and construction of a portfolio binder. The final meeting session will serve as closure and reflection, including a vocabulary review and helpful tips and strategies on how to become college and career ready in the profession of Social Work.

WSU C2 Warriors College Experience Pharmacy and Health Science Students participating in the Pharmacy and Health Science track of the WSU C2 Pipeline Warriors College Experience will connect various health care professions together by following a patient’s disease through its diagnosis and treatment. Students will start their first session by being “introduced” to the patient and talking with Physician Assistants about primacy care. From there, students will follow the patient to the Clinical Lab Sciences and Radiologic Technology departments, speak with the Nurse Anesthetist, Pathologist Assistant, Radiation Therapy Technologist, the Pharmacist, and a Physical and Occupational Therapist. The final session will be spent with the Mortuary Science department where the students will learn about funeral preparations, meeting with the family, restoration and preservation issues for the patient.

WSU C2 Warriors College Experience • IPE Teams • 20 Teams of five students (one from each specialty) • Sponsored by a Health Facility or Agency • Teams will compete based on knowledge they have learned from their “Specialties” and other Sessions • Poster • Project or Concept • Teams will be Judged in a “Shark Tank” Atmosphere • Top Three Teams will win scholarships to Wayne State • Teachers participating will also have to compete against other teachers

WSU C2 Warriors College Experience • Needs • IPE Team Sponsors • Mentorship of a group (5 students) for about 10 hours over the two week period.  The mentorship would be done on campus.  It would not have to be the same person, it could be a group/team of people from your organization. • Attendance of the sponsor(s) at the presentation Gala on Thursday, July 17th.  • Attend a Pre-Meeting in June to go over the program, see the curriculum being used and the rubrics for the competition. This will be during the day and last approximately 1 ½ hours.

  31. WSU C2 Warriors College Experience • Sponsor Benefits: • Each of the IPE teams will be named after the organization. This will help to promote a sense of team within the IPE as well as give marketing and visibility to the sponsor. Students will be able to say for example that this summer I was in the School of Medicine and belonged to the “XZY Team”. • Recognition as a Sponsor in all Marketing Materials. • Opportunity for your Sponsored Team to compete against other teams in the industry. • Recognition at the Gala Event on Thursday, July 17th
