WHS Freshman Academy • Students will be part of a team • Study/Lunches are with team teachers • GIFT Lunch (Get It Finished Today!) • 2 primary goals • Students pass all of their classes • Each student will become involved in high school student life (activities, sports, fine arts, clubs, events, etc) Dr. Todd Novak Director

  18. Terms That New Students Should Know • Credit: The value given to a course. 1.0 or .5 • Required Course: A course you MUST take and complete to graduate from high school. Remember to sign up for both sections of a year-long course (A & B) • Elective:A course you select that interests you or can prepare for future learning and career aspirations. • Selective:A series of courses in a content area that satisfy graduation requirements. English Example: Advanced Placement (AP), Creative Writing, British Literature, Mod. Literature, Advanced Composition, etc • Pre-requisite:A course you take before another; example: Drawing or Exploring Visual Art before 3D Design... Spanish IA before Spanish IB

  19. Classes most students take in 9th Grade • 1.0 credit of English • Example: English IA & English IB • 1.0 credit of Math • Example: Algebra IA & IB • 1.0 credit of Science • Example: Biology A & B • 0.5 credit of Social Studies • Example: World Geography

  20. Other Popular Courses for Freshman • Physical Education • Computer • Fine Arts • Speech or Debate • Technology Education (Tech Ed) • Family & Consumer Science (FACS) • World Languages • Social StudiesSelective (such as Global Issues, or Early History of Mankind)

Middle School Credit • Students who have taken high school courses in 8th grade and passed the course will receive high school credit • The credit will appear on your transcript • 2 quarters of middle school health integration count for high school health requirement. (must be from a SFSD middle school)

  22. Registration Notes • All students must register for 6 credits • All students have a lunch/study period • Consider accelerated courses. Speak to your middle school counselor or math and English teachers.

Opportunities Scholarship • 4 credits of English • 3 credits of Social Studies • 4 credits of Algebra or Higher Mathematics • 4 credits of Science • 1 credit of Fine Arts • 2 credits of the following or a combination of the two: • Career and Technical Education Courses (CTE) • World Language • 1/2 credit of Personal Finance or Economics • 1/2 credit of Physical Education • 1/2 credit of Health or Health Integration

  31. Activities and Athletics • Every student should choose at least one activity to join • Students involved with at least one co-curricular activity have better grades and better attendance • Start building a resume for potential scholarships and awards

Summer School • Located at CTE Academy (I-29 & West Madison Street) • Speech-only Session = June 6th -20th • Online and Work For Credit Session = June 6th – July 28th • Responsible for own transportation • Register on Sioux Falls School District web site • Cost: $150 per ½ credit $110 for reduced; $75 for free lunch

Connections Class • June/July 2016 (10 School Days)  • Session #1    8:00 am—3:15 pm • June 9th—June 23rd • (Not meeting on Fri., June 17) • Session #2    8:00 am—3:15 pm • July 6th—July 21st • (Not Meeting on Fridays) • @ WHS • Walk into high school on that first day ready for the jump to high school!

  34. Other Information • Classes will be dropped if enrollment is too low • Schedules & tours will be available in August at “Warrior Day” • Freshmen Orientation (attendance required) will be held in mid-August.
