  2. What is it?A fictional novel that takes place in modern times. It’s about a 17 year-old kid who’s whole family is the most powerful mob in New York. He doesn’t want to be part of it, yet the more he tries, the more he becomes part of it and he just keeps going deeper and deeper.   3. Attribute: Settings that make this book a realistic fiction. “Alex shoots me a look as if I just flushed in the Poker World Championships(34).” “Tommy has a place in Greenwich Village, not far from NYU(41).” “We’re in the library to research our web sites for New Media class(64).”

Attribute: This story is Realistic fiction because the main character’s family is part of the mob, and they are being watched by the FBI. “Every night before he shuts out the lights in the den, he’ll look up and address the fixture: ‘And a special good night to you, Agent Numb-nuts’ , or he’ll call to the garage, ‘We’re going to dinner if that’s alright with you, Agent Needlenick. Should I bring you a doggie bag?’(16).” “There are a lot of uncles. I made a list once. I was up to sixty before I gave up. And some of the names! I have Uncle Fingers, Uncle Puke, Uncle Shank, Uncle Fin, Uncle Pampers, and Uncle Exit. I have two uncles named Nose-Big Nose, and No Nose. I even have an uncle named Uncle(14).” “The only time my dad made the papers was after the famous gangland assassination of Mario Calabrese in 1993. The cops are sure that my father ordered the hit, but they were never able to pin it on him(24).”

The reason why I know him is because I recognize Rafe. I know him as Rafael. Remember Johnny from my one and only football game? Well Rafael is his dad. He also happens to be a member of Uncle Uncle’s crew. And Uncle Uncle is under Uncle Carmine. And all of them are under Anthony Luca. The kick in the pants all sizzles all the way up my spine and rattles my pituitary. The Platinum Coast-The scam-it’s a Luca operation!(209)”

  6. EVALUATION: Is Son of the Mob a good example of a realistic fiction ? • Yes. Gordon Korman must’ve had a lot of experiences with mobs. The Mob in this book were more realistic and less like The Godfather type gangsters. The crimes displayed in this story are definitely plausible. The descriptions really showed us the main Character’s emotions throughout the novel. In the end the all around theme was that no matter how hard you try you will always be a part of “the family.” A theme we all learn at some point in our lives.
