FEEDBACK Listen to students? Ross Gilman Education Officer Swansea University Student Union
Concerns: What are students telling us? • Timing of feedback Students just want to know when! As long they can learn from mistakes and use comments for following piece of work, time isn’t an issue! • Quality of feedback Too much brief and negative feedback Need to learn from mistakes but also know what you are doing right Some students get minimal comments • Type of feedback Little or no exam feedback Differences across departments Inconsistencies within departments
Feedback Background Feedback an issue for students Data for this view comes from SUSU/Swansea University Omnibus student satisfaction survey undertaken yearly since mid 1990’s. 1290 student replies out of a population of 13,900 1055 Undergraduate responses Talk about undergraduates views of feedback and possible solutions
Why views on feedback are important 90.4% of Undergraduate students receive some form of feedback as part of their course
Promptness of feedback Promptness of feedback is an issue to over a third of undergraduates (34.5%) Swansea University has a suggested 3 week return period on feedback Is not a policy which creates further issues
Feedback Criteria Over a quarter of undergraduate students feel that criteria for marking was not made clear to them Differences across departments creates misunderstanding
Quality of feedback 1. A good point with respect to feedback is that students on the whole consider arrangements are either very fair and fair with 72.6% responding positively Good practice should be identified and disseminated.
Quality of feedback 2. Effectiveness of feedback is questioned by 1 in 5 (neither effective nor ineffective) which raises further questions While another 14.8% think it being ineffective or very ineffective
Student Input is Key! Students / Student Officers are the key to better feedback: • Only one Student Officer at last event! • Different students will have different views based on their experiences • Students are the best people to share good practise • Exam feedback and good practise campaigns won’t run themselves • NSS results sometimes take 2/3 years to improve – we need to start now!
NUS Feedback Amnesty Campaign GREATEST COMPLAINT - lack of exam feedback STICKER FOR STUDENT EXAM SCRIPTS - asking for feedback on our exams PURPOSE: To encourage SUs and Institutions to sit down to try and amend university regulations and ensure students start getting exam feedback
